Soccer, Field Hockey Regular Season Champions To Be Decided Today

Updated 10/29/1999

The schedule-makers waited for the last weekend of the season to pair up the top teams in the conference. The Mid-American Conference regular-season champion in both women's soccer and field hockey will be decided today. Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan will play in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. at 3 p.m. for the championship in women's soccer, while Ohio and Kent will battle in Kent, Ohio tonight for at least a co-championship in field hockey.

Central Michigan currently leads Eastern Michigan by one point in the standings, while both teams have the same winning percentage (.800). If the two teams tie, Central Michigan will walk away with the regular-season title and Eastern Michigan will be the number one seed in the MAC tournament. Regular season standings are based on points gained by wins and ties and tournament seeds are based on head-to-head competition, winning percentage, record vs. ranked conference opponents and goal differential against conference opponents. Eastern Michigan has outscored its MAC opponents by 19 goals and Central Michigan has outscored its MAC opponents by 18 goals.

Ohio and Kent will match-up for the second time this season to play for at least a share of the Mid-American Conference field hockey championship. Ohio leads the season series with a 3-0 victory in Athens earlier this season. Ball State must win out this weekend over Miami and Louisville to share the title with tonight's winner. If there are co-champs, then tonight's match will also decide the number one seed in the MAC field hockey tournament. If Ohio defeats Kent, Ohio will be the number one seed in the tournament and Ball State will be the number two seed. If Kent defeats Ohio, Ball State will be the number one seed and Kent will be the number two seed in the tournament. These seedings are based head-to-head competition, winning percentage vs. ranked conference opponents and goal differential in head-to-head competition. The MAC tournament will be hosted by Ball State in Muncie, Ind. on November 5-7.
