Four Different Schools Honored In MAC Baseball's Players Of The Week Selections

CLEVELAND -- The Mid-American Conference today announced the East and West Division Players and Pitchers of the Week for the week ending Mar. 11. Each week, the MAC will honor both an East and a West Division Player and Pitcher of the Week.

This week's Player of the Week from the East Division is Kent State's John VanBenschoten, while Buffalo's John Sullivan is the Pitcher of the Week. From the West Division, Central Michigan's Jason Phelps is the Player of the Week, while Western Michigan's Shawn Morrison is the Pitcher of the Week.

East Division Player of the Week
John VanBenschoten, Kent State (Jr., 1B, Milford, Ohio/Milford HS)

VanBenschoten was 10-for-16 (.625) with four home runs, 13 RBIs and eight runs scored as the Golden Flashes went 2-2 in games with Eastern Kentucky and Wright State. The junior first baseman was 4-4 with eight RBIs, two home runs and a triple in an 11-10 loss to Eastern Kentucky. He also added two more homers versus Wright State and finished the weekend with three multi-hit games and three multi-run contests.

Other Nominees:
•Buffalo's Tim Sova batted .391 (9-for-23) with six runs scored and two RBIs in seven games during the Bulls' spring trip to Homestead, Fla.

•Marshall's Jason Ricceri was 7-for-14 (.500) with nine RBIs, three home runs and six runs scored. Ricceri was 4-for-7 with six RBIs and a home run in the Herd’s 20-7 win over Gardner-Webb on Sunday.

East Division Pitcher of the Week
John Sullivan (So., SP, Buffalo, N.Y./Timon/St. Jude HS)

Buffalo's Sullivan was 1-0 with a no decision and a 0.00 ERA in two appearances for the Bulls. The sophomore pitched 1.2 innings of relief, allowing only two hits while striking out one against Boston College. Sullivan then tossed seven innings of two-hit ball versus St. Bonaventure, striking out five, walking two and giving up an unearned run.

Other Nominees:
•Kent State's Jason Biniker picked up a win over Wright State, going 6.2 innings. The junior gave up seven runs and three runs -- all of them earned -- while striking out four and walking three.

•Marshall's Chris Wean pitched six innings of three-hit ball but took a loss in a 1-0 decision to Gardner-Webb. Wean, who retired the final 14 batters he faced, gave up one earned run and walked four.

West Division Player of the Week
Jason Helps, Central Michigan (Sr., SS, Wyoming, Ontario/L.C.C.V.I.)

Helps guided the Chippewas to a 5-2 record last week and the title at the 54th Annual Baseball Week Tournament at Rollins College after hitting .344 (11-for-32). The senior also drove in 14 runs for the week scored seven runs, hit three home runs and recorded two doubles and a triple. Helps hit for the cycle against Long Island on Mar. 6 and was also named to the all-tournament team.

Other Nominees:
•Western Michigan's John Toner batted .286 (4-for-14) with seven RBIs and two home runs in a four-game series with Xavier.

West Division Pitcher of the Week
Shawn Morrison, Western Michigan (So., LHP, Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS)

Western Michigan's Morrison picked up his third win of the season with a victory over Xavier. In 6.2 innings of work, the sophomore scattered seven hits and allowed one run while fanning two and walking a pair.
