ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - LaVell Blanchard scored a career-high 28 points as Michigan broke a four-game losing streak with an 89-71 win over Bowling Green on
Wednesday (Dec. 13).
The Wolverines (3-5) are off to their worst start since the 1981-82 season when they started 1-7. Their last four losses came against Top 25 opponents.
Michigan closed the game with a 21-6 run to pull away.
The Wolverines appeared to be in control of the contest against Bowling Green (3-3) several times, but each time, the Falcons fought back to make it competitive.
The Wolverines led 68-54 with just over eight minutes left, but saw Bowling Green go on an 11-0 run to cut its deficit to three with 4:47 left.
Michigan quickly took the momentum back when Blanchard made a jump shot and a steal, which resulted in a Josh Asselin dunk.
Asselin had 18 points and nine rebounds. Bernard Robinson added 17 points.
Len Matela led Bowling Green with 16 points. Keith McLeod added 15 points.
Michigan athletic director Bill Martin hoped to quiet some of the speculation that Brian Ellerbe's job is jeopardy.
``I fully support Brian Ellerbe,'' Martin said. ``Would I like to see us more competitive against some of the premier teams that we're used to competing with? Sure. But I
think we can get there.''
