Miami and Ball State Student-Athletes Recognized As MAC Players of the Week

CLEVELAND (Dec. 11) -- Miami's Alex Shorts (East Division) and Ball State's Theron Smith (West Division) are the recipients of the Mid-American Conference men's basketball Player of the Week awards for the fourth week of the 2000-01 season.

Shorts averaged 18 points a game as Miami went 1-1 on the week, but it was his team-high 16 points in just 23 minutes in a 73-64 win at No. 10 ranked Notre Dame that garnered the player of the week award. The win against the Irish was the first by a Miami team over a top 25 squad on their home floor since Nov. 26, 1983, in a 63-57 win at No. 19 Indiana. Shorts had scored a game-high 20 points in a 55-54 loss to Dayton on Wednesday. For the two games, Short connected on 51.7% (15-of-29) of his shots from the field and 6-of-9 from the line. Shorts also averaged 3.0 rebounds per game.

Smith set an Ameritech Indiana Classic record with 40 points in Ball State's first-round 91-71 win against Texas Tech and added a team-high 12 rebounds and three steals. He followed with 12 points and five rebounds in the championship game, a 65-50 loss to the host Hoosiers. The 40-point effort also tied the IU Assembly Hall record by points for a non-Indiana University player. Smith's 16 field goals in the first round set an Indiana Classic record. He was named to the five-man all-tournament team.

West Division Player of the Week nominations
Central Michigan's Mike Manceil averaged 19 ppg, 4 rpg, 1 spg and shot 60.0% (15-of-25) from the field as CMU lost to Loyola-Chicago, 75-70, and beat Northern Iowa, 74-66

Eastern Michigan's Melvin Hicks averaged 16.5 ppg and 6.0 rpg while shooting 52.0% (13-of-25) from the field as EMU went 1-1, beating IUPUI, 67-64, and losing to Iona, 70-57.

Northern Illinois' Sean Ezell averaged 18.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.5 apg and 2.0 spg while shooting 68.2% (15-of-22 from the field) as the Huskies lost to David Lipscomb, 76-64, and defeated Rockford College, 121-88.

Toledo's Greg Stempin scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in an 84-67 loss at St. Bonaventure.

East Division Player of the Week nominations
Akron's Nate Schindewolf averaged 14.5 ppg and shot 62.5% (10-of-16) from the field as the Zips went 1-1, beating Rhode Island, 74-60, and losing at No. 23 Alabama, 79-68.

Buffalo's Davis Lawrence scored 15 points in a 64-59 win over Duquesne in the Bull's first win of the season. Thirteen of his 15 points came in the last seven minutes of the game.

Kent State's Kyrem Massey averaged 20 ppg and 7 rpg as the Golden Flashes went 2-0. KSU defeated Youngstown State, 76-55, and Wisconsin-Green Bay, 64-47.

Marshall's J.R. VanHoose recorded his 21st career double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds in an 82-70 win over Niagara.
