CLEVELAND, OH -- Bowling Green's Ty Fowler (men's soccer) and Ball State's
Sally Northcroft (field hockey) were named the MAC Scholar Athletes of
the Week on October 11, 1999.
Fowler (Sr., 3.89, psychology, Northville, Mich.) allowed only two goals
in two matches as BG defeated Bucknell, 5-1, and tied Western Michigan,
1-1 in double overtime. WMU's loan goal was a penalty kick. Fowler
made four saves versus Bucknell and six saves against the Broncos.
Northcroft (Sr., 3.56, physical education, Harare, Zimbabwe) scored
four goals to lead Ball State to a 6-1 win over Central Michigan,
extending BSU's regular-season winning streak against MAC opponents to
64. Northcroft's second goal of the game, also the game-winner, broke
her own school record for goals in a season which was 34, set last
year. Her 37 goals and 75 points in 1999 rank No. 1 in the nation. She
has scored two or more goals in 10 of the Cardinals' 13 games this
season, and three or more seven times.
The honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has
a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well
during that week's competition. The winners are selected by one of the
conference's faculty athletic representatives.

Bowling Green: Melissa Lewis (volleyball, Sr., 3.12, human movement
science, Mansfield, Ohio) helped the Falcons to a perfect 3-0 week,
with wins over Wright State, Kent and Ohio. She scored a career-high 31
kills, just four off the school record, against Wright State. She also
picked up a career-high 22 digs in the match. Against Kent, she had 31
kills for the second match in a row and became just the ninth player in
school history to register 1,000 career kills.
Buffalo: Keri Shiels (volleyball, So., 3.34, psychology, Baldwin, N.Y.)
had 13 kills, two service aces and six digs in a 3-0 win over Kent,
15-12, 15-12, 15-8. She recorded 14 kills and 13 digs against Akron.
Shiels leads the team in kills with a 3.59 average and is second in
digs with 3.13 digs per game. Tim Songer (men's soccer, Jr., 3.02,
finance, Liverpool, N.Y.) scored the team's first goal and assisted on
the second goal of a 4-2 win over Long Island University. He is second
on the team in scoring with nine goals, five assists and 23 points.
Buffalo is now 9-3-1 on the season.
Central Michigan: Jennifer Mitchell (volleyball, Jr., 3.31, business,
Lake Odessa, Mich.) posted 18 digs, 17 kills, 12 blocks and three
service aces in CMU's two matches last week. She posted six blocks in
each of the matches and has added her name to the Chippewas' record
books. Mitchell now ranks 10th in CMU's annals with 41 career block
solos.
Eastern Michigan: Domtilla Mwei (women's cross country, So., 3.03,
computer science, Lesos,) continued one of the best season's in the
school's history, winning her fourth event in five outings, outsprinting
Michigan's Lisa Ouellet at the finish to get the victory in a time of
18:36.2. Blake McDowell (men's cross country, So., 3.58, accounting,
Reynoldsburg, Ohio) has led the Eagles in every event this season,
pacing the team once again with an individual title in a time of
25:08.2. This was his first individual title of the 1999 season in five
outings and has placed in the top-10 in four events this year.
Kent: Maggie Downey (field hockey, Sr., 3.18, elementary education, St.
Louis, Mo.) recorded a goal and three assists in Kent's 6-0 victory over
Louisville. She had two goals in a 5-1 victory over Miami as well.
Downey now leads the team in goals (13) and points (36) and has led Kent
to a 10-5 overall record and a 3-2 league record. Karoly Bozan (men's
cross country, Jr., 3.34, Cegled, Norway) finished fourth at the
All-Ohio Championships with a time of 25:57.7, in his first race of the
season. After sitting out the first three races due to an injury, Bozan
led his squad to a fifth-place finish out of 38 teams.
Miami: Alissia Thompson (volleyball, Sr., 3.28, psychology, Elk Grove
Village, Ill.) had one of her best defensive performances of the
season, collecting 15 digs (5.0 per game) against Eastern Michigan. She
also averaged 2.0 blocks per game against the Eagles. In Miami's
triumph over Central Michigan, Thompson recorded 13 digs and 1.0 blocks
per game, and completed the match with 18 kills (4.50 per game) and a
.455 hitting percentage (the team's best individual hitting percentage
in a four-game match this season). She averaged 1.43 blocks, 4.00 digs,
4.14 kills and a had a .338 hitting percentage on the week, helping the
RedHawks to a 5-0 MAC record and extending Miami's homecourt conference
win streak to 14.
Ohio: Lori Schmidt (women's soccer, Jr., 3.98, broadcast journalism,
Pickerington, Ohio) posted nine saves in 165 minutes with just one goal
allowed (.545. GAA) in two games, a scoreless tie against Bowling Green
and a 3-1 victory over Toledo. In her first career start, Schmidt
played the entire double-overtime game (120 minutes) in goal. She
recorded six saves on 11 shots faced against BG in her first career
shutout. She had another three saves on five shots on goal against
Toledo. Tom Weilbacher (football, So., 3.15, undecided, Columbus, Ohio)
was the team's leading tackler against Akron with nine stops, including
eight first hits. He was a member of the defense that held the Zips to
336 total yards. Weilbacher leads the Bobcats with 47 tackles on the
season, averaging nearly eight stops per game. He also has six tackles
for loss on the season with two fumbles recovered.
Toledo: Kim Huntington (women's soccer, Sr., 3.614, elementary
education, Mentor, Ohio) scored the lone goal in Toledo's 3-1 loss to
Ohio. Kevin Kornowa (men's golf, So., 3.874, business, Sylvania, Ohio)
was UT's top finisher at the Windon Memorial with a tie for eighth place
out of 75 golfers. He shot a 218.
