Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: January 25-31, 2010
David Kool (Sr., 3.43, physical education, Grand Rapids, Mich.) averaged 34.0 points, 2.0 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.5 rebounds per game as he became the all-time career leading scorer in Western Michigan history with 1,828 points, which is also tied for 19th all-time in MAC history. Kool hit 23-of-43 (.535) from the field and 18-of-19 (.947) at the free throw line. Kool had the best game by any MAC player this season with a career-high 38 points at Kent State. The MAC Player of the Year candidate made 12-of-23 field goals, including a go-ahead bucket with 7.1 seconds remaining for the final two of his 28 second half points. He also made all 12 free throw attempts. Earlier in the week, Kool scored 30 points, 22 in the second half, as he broke WMU's 46-year-old all-time scoring record in front of the hometown crowd. He hit 11-of-20 from the field and 6-of-7 at the foul line against the Zips.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
