The University at Buffalo women's basketball team has been invited to the Women's Basketball Invitational, its first ever trip to a postseason tournament. The Bulls will face Wright State in the first round of the tournament, Wednesday night at Wright State's Nutter Center.
The Wright State/Buffalo winner will face the winner of Sacred Heart and Manhattan in the quarterfinals with the date and site to be determined.
Senior Kourtney Brown leads all players in the 16-team WBI in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and blocks. Ashley Zuber leads all players in the tournament in assists. The only team in the field that UB has faced this season is Cleveland State. Of the 15 other teams, UB has never faced 10 of them.
Senior Kourtney Brown is just 26 points shy of becoming the 11th player in MAC history to score 2,000 career points. She is also looking to become just the fourth player in the Big Four history to score 2,000 career points.
Wright State enters the WBI with a 19-12 overall record and finished fourth in the Horizon League with an 11-7 mark. The 19 wins tie the 2004-05 squad for the most wins for the program since moving up to Division I and only trail the 24-6 mark in 1986-87 for the most ever in school history. The 11 Horizon League wins also tied a program record with 2004-05, when the Raiders were 11-5.
The Women's Basketball Invitational is a 16-team, single elimination tournament, which is broken into two eight-team halves. First round games will take place on Wednesday and Thursday night with the championship game tentatively scheduled for March 26 or 27.
