CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2003-04 men's swimming and diving Academic All-MAC team Tuesday, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at MAC institutions. The team honors 16 student-athletes due to a tie in voting procedures.
Eastern Michigan led the team with the most student-athletes honored with seven. Seniors John Bartlet, Kevin Garman and Branislav Hronsky, juniors Doug Fleming and Ondrej Pekarovic and sophomores Alex Schulz and Eric Stanczyk received the honor for the Eagles.
Five student-athletes join the Academic All-MAC team for the second consecutive year. Ball State's Ryan Plantz, Eastern Michigan's Bartlet, Fleming and Hronsky and Ohio's Jason Folt were also named to the 2002-03 Academic All-MAC team.
Six student-athletes honored for academic achievements were also All-MAC selections. Ball State's Kurtis Leer and Eastern Michigan's Bartlet, Fleming, Hronsky and Pekarovic received first-team All-MAC accolades, while Ohio's Matthew Bey was named to the conference's second team.
Rounding out the 2003-04 Academic All-MAC team are Ball State's Robert Funk and Josh Schum, Buffalo's Mark Sy and Geoff Wells and Ohio's Jamie Suter.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
