CLEVELAND - The Mid-American Conference announced its 2005 gymnastics Academic All-MAC Team Thursday, as voted by faculty athletic representatives at the MAC institutions. The team honors 11 student-athletes. The number of honorees on the MAC All-Academic Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33% of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
Two of the honorees also earned All-MAC recognition for the 2005 season. Northern Illinois' Ashlee Williams earned first team All-MAC honors, while Ball State's Kelli Davis was named to the second team.
Eastern Michigan led the all schools with three members on the Academic All-MAC team. Rebecca Fuss, Laura Holensworth and Emily Koechel.
Ball State, Bowling Green and Northern Illinois all placed two student-athletes each on the team. BSU's Davis is joined by teammate Jenna Tarkington, while Kari Elste and Jessica Guyer represent the Falcons and NIU's Williams is joined by teammate Kelly Kramer.
2005 Gymnast of the Year Kara Reighard of Central Michigan and Cherisse Marier of Western Michigan complete the 11 member academic team.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
