March 30, 2005
CLEVELAND - Central Michigan's and Kent State's teams, plus a total of seven individuals from other Mid-American Conference schools, will represent the league at the 2005 NCAA Gymnastics Regionals April 9.
The No. 14-ranked Chippewas have been placed in the West Regional at the University of Washington, Seattle. CMU accumulated a regional qualifying score of 195.540, good for the third team spot in the region. Central Michigan will face off against No. 1 seeded UCLA, No. 2 Penn State, No. 4 Washington, No. 5 Stanford and No. 6 Boise State.
The No. 27 Golden Flashes qualified for the Central Regional at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. KSU currently ranks sixth in the region with a 194.975 regional qualifying average. The other five teams in the region are No. 1 seeded Alabama, No. 2 Iowa State, No. 3 Utah State, No. 4 Auburn and No. 5 Kentucky. Also qualifying in the Central Region are five individuals from other MAC institutions. Slated to compete in the all-around are Western Michigan's Cherisse Marier, Ball State's Jessica Surridge, and Eastern Michigan's Jolene Worley, while Bowling Green's, Kristin DiPietro was selected as an alternate. Bowling Green's Jessica Guyer has been selected to be an alternate in two individual specialists events vault and floor exercise.
Northern Illinois, the lone MAC school in the South Central Region, will send two individuals. Senior Kristina Campos will compete in the all-around, while teammate Ashlee Williams is the individual uneven bars event specialists. The South Central Regional will be at Lincoln, Nebraska, on the campus of the University of Nebraska.
Six teams, five all-around competitors (who are not on a qualifying team) and one individual event specialist per event [who has a minimum qualifying score (RQS) of 9.4] were named to each of the six regions. The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Auburn, Alabama, April 21-23, hosted by Auburn University.
In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.
In case of ties for selection to regional competition, the team, all-around competitor or individual event specialist with the highest score, not including the six used for the regional qualifying score, will qualify. If a tie still exists, the process is continued until the tie is broken.
