Female Scholar Athlete of the Week: March 28 - April 3
Toledo Naama Shafir (basketball)
Naama Shafir (Jr., 3.448, business) was named WNIT Tournament MVP as Toledo became the first Mid-American Conference school to capture a postseason basketball title.
Shafir scored a career-high 40 points in a 76-68 victory over Pac-10 foe Southern Cal in the title game on Saturday to go along with eight rebounds, four assists and two steals. Her final six points - all from the free-throw line in the final 25 seconds - clinched the victory for Toledo (29-8) and earned her MVP honors.
Shafir scored 23 points in the second half, including nine straight during a 12-0 run that gave the Rockets a 57-47 lead. The Trojans (24-13) got within 70-66 in the final minute, but Shafir put the game out of reach with her string of free throws.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
