Western Michigan Leads After Round One of Women's Golf Championship

Indian Springs, Ohio--- Day one of the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Championship concluded on Friday with Western Michigan holding a five-shot lead over five-time defending champion Kent State.

The Broncos shot a team total of 301, with three players carding rounds in the 70's. Leading the way for WMU was freshman Erin Thorne, who shot 70 en route to ending the day in first-place. The round is the lowest ever shot in the first round of the tournament. Sophomore Jenna Walter shot the third-best round on the day, with a score of 72.

Sitting in second-place is Kent State. The Golden Flashes turned in a score of 306. 2002 MAC Freshman of the Year Gabby Wedding paced KSU with a total of 71 and currently sits in second-place. Also in the top-10 is Becky Wood, whose score of 76 puts her in a tie at seventh-place. This is the first time since 1999, the first year of the tournament, that Kent State has not been in the lead after the first round.

Ohio University holds third-place, after which the Bobcats fired a score of 313. The Bobcats had two individuals finish in the top-ten after day one, as Sara Ann Palmer sits tied for seventh-place with a mark of 76, while Julie Tomlinson is tied for ninth-place with a score of 77.

In fourth-place is Toledo, who was led by senior Sara Boogaard. She tallied a score of 75 and sits in sixth-place. Joining Boogaard in the top-ten is teammate Helene Thoman, who fired a 77 and is tied in ninth-place with Tomlinson.

Behind senior Jenny Schnipke's first round of 74, Bowling Green sits in fifth-place. The Falcons fired a team score of 321, which is their second-best ever opening round score

Freshman Allyson Hatcher's score of 73 is good enough to put her in fourth-place after day one, en route to Marshall's sixth-place finish on the day. Her score helped the second-year program shoot its lowest ever round at the MAC Championship, with the score of 324.

Eastern Michigan sits in seventh-place with a team total of 329, as the Eagles placed two individuals in the top-20 after day one. Rachel Stone fired a round of 79, and sits in a five way tie for eleventh-place, while teammate Lindsay McEwin's 80 was good enough to tie for sixteenth-place.

Northern Illinois' opening round of 331 marks the second-best round ever at the MAC Championships for the Huskies, as they currently hold a one stroke lead over Ball State. Jackie Bailey, Lisa Bailey and Jackie Heslop all fired rounds of 82 in helping the Huskies, whle Carmen Bodine scored a total of 81 to lead the way for the Cardinals.
