YPSILANTI, Mich. - After the first day of competition on Thursday at the MAC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich., the hosting Eagles have a comfortable lead over second-place Ohio, thanks in part to the success of their relay teams.
In the first event of the evening, the 200 freestyle relay, EMU nipped second-place finisher Ohio by one-tenth of a second. Adam Cook, Kevin Joyce, Doug Fleming and David Ruch edged out the Bobcats on the final two legs of the relay, winning with a time of 1:22.23.
In the evening's next event, the 500 freestyle, EMU's Jason Piercey outswam the nearest competitor by over three seconds and posted an NCAA B qualifying time with a 4:25.37.
Eastern Michigan's success continued in the 200 individual medley, as Dan Wohl finished first with a time of 1:49.55, good for NCAA B standards.
MAC Swimmer of the Week (Nov. 4) Andrew Keefe of Miami conquered the field in the 50 free, tabbing a time of 20.52.
In the one-meter diving event, Miami's Peter Donahue posted a six-dive total of 308.35, good for top honors.
Wrapping up the night's competition was the 200 medley relay, and host EMU was back on top as the quartet of Doug Fleming, John Bartlet, David Ruch and Dan Wohl took first with a time of 3:19.85.
While EMU has a sizable lead over second-place Ohio, the race for third place is tight as only one point separates Ball State and Miami. Teams will continue to jockey for standings on Friday when the preliminaries begin at noon and the final heats at 7 p.m. at Jones Natatorium in Ypsilanti, Mich.
