HAMILTON, Ohio - Western Michigan University's women's tennis team completed a dominant run through the 2006 Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Championship Sunday afternoon at Riverside Athletic Club, downing second-seeded University at Buffalo, 4-0, and capturing the program's sixth MAC Tourament title. The Broncos, who won the tournament title for the first time since 2000 also earned the MAC's automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament field.

Western Michigan got an immediate boost on the doubles court from the tandem of Reedhina Parekh and Kerstin Pahl, who coasted to an 8-1 win over Buffalo's Miglena Nenova and Kristen Ortman at No. 2 doubles. From there, the Broncos rallied from early deficits on both the first and third doubles courts. WMU's No. 1 pair of Carrie Jeanmaire and Malena Remynse provided the decisive point with an 8-4 win over UB's Tina Jacob and Andreea Novaceanu. The Broncos also led, 6-3, at the No. 3 court, behind Rattiya Hiranrat and Norika Saruta, when the match was called.

Singles competition was close in the first set, with Buffalo again creeping out early but WMU charging back to regain control. In the end, it would, once again, be WMU's depth that would propel it to the victory, as the decisive points came from fourth, fifth and sixth singles. Hiranrat won 6-1, 6-1 at fourth singles, Kerstin Pahl won 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles and Priyanka Parekh clinched the win, 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles.

Hiranrat was honored as MAC Championship MVP, while fellow Broncos Priyanka Parekh and Kerstin Pahl also earned all-tournament honors. Buffalo's Novaceanu and Nenova, along with Miami's Remy Swain and Eastern Michigan's Vanessa Frankowski also were honored as all-tournament picks.

Western Michigan, which improved to 20-5 on the year and also won the league's regular-season title, awaits word on its berth into the NCAA Tournament. Buffalo completed its best season in the MAC with its first league title match appearance and a 16-5 mark.
