Western Michigan Wins MAC Men's Tennis Championship

TOLEDO, Ohio - Second-seeded Western Michigan fell behind 2-0, but had a strong showing in singles play, leading the Broncos to a 4-2 MAC Championship clinching victory over top-seeded Ball State here at UT's Varsity Courts Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Broncos will represent the Mid-American Conference at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

After dropping the match's opening doubles point, the Broncos fell behind 2-0 after Brady Crosby lost at two singles, but the Broncos evened the score with wins from Alex Birchmeier and Jeff French at five and six singles. Tim Bradshaw then handed Ball State's Matt Baccarani his first MAC loss at one singles to set the stage for senior Jose Orozco.

Orozco responded with a hard-faught 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win over the Cardinals' Tony Epkey.

The 57th ranked Broncos' opponent in the first round of the NCAA Tournament will be announced Wednesday night at 8:30 p.m.on ESPNEWS.
