MEN'S PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Hermann Kuschke, IPFW
Freshman - Windheok, Nambia/Van Deer Meer Tennis Academy
Kuschke went 5-0 last week in #4 singles action for the Mastodons. At Dayton, he defeated Jamison Downs, 6-7(6), 6-1. During the Mastodons four match homestand, Kuschke won in straight sets every match. He defeated Eric Fey of the University of Illinois Chicago and Lipscomb's Jeff West both by scores of 6-4, 6-2. Against St. Francis (PA) he defeated Jeff Seevers 6-3, 6-1 and then in their final match of the weekend, he defeated Eastern Illinois' Chris Thomas, 6-0, 6-2. Kuschke, a true freshman, just started at IPFW in January.
Patrick Thompson - Ball State
Senior - Medina, Ohio/Median Senior
Thompson scored three singles wins in three matches last week, including a straight set 6-0, 6-3 victory over Michigan State's Joseph McWilliams. The win helped the No. 70 BSU men's squad secure a 4-3 decision over the Spartans. Thompson also came up with a 6-2, 6-4 and a 6-1, 6-4 win over Indiana State's Rishi Behl and Valpo's Mike Shideler, respectively, at the No. 3 position. In doubles action, Thompson paired with Tony Epkey for an 8-3 victory over Valparaiso's Mike Wagner and Dave Bukowski at the No. 2 slot.
Brian Livingston - Northern Illinois
Freshman - Skokie, Ill./Nile North HS
Livingston posted a 6-4, 6-3 two-set victory over UIC's Ivan Kovalev. In addition, he teamed with David Katz for a hard-fought 8-5 win in the No. 2 doubles slot in order to help the Huskies take two of three for the doubles point. So far in the spring dual-meet season, the NIU frosh boasts a 3-1 singles record while he and Katz are 2-2 in doubles competition.
Chris Clark - Toledo
Sophomore - Battle Creek, Mich./Central
Clark finished the weekend 4-0 in helping lead the Rockets to a 3-0 weekend at home with wins over Illinois-Chicago, Wright State and Youngstown State. Against UIC, Clark won at second singles Adriano Liccardo 6-3, 6-4, while running his doubles winning streak with Jared Miller to three matches with an 8-4 win at the third flight. The following day against WSU, Clark won 6-3, 6-3 at second singles, before a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Youngstown State at first singles.
Kevin Hayward - Western Michigan
Freshman - Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS
Hayward helped lead Western Michigan to a 3-0 weekend against Wisconsin, #66 Purdue and Kalamazoo College. Hayward opened the weekend with a straight set win (6-2,6-0) over Gian Hodgson of Wisconsin at five singles in a 4-3 team win over the Badgers. Hayward's biggest win of the weekend came Sunday when he knocked off Purdue's Paul Rose 6-4, 6-3 in four singles. He then teamed with fellow freshman John Pelton for the first time ever to knock off Dave Atallah and Andrew Brown 8-5 at three doubles against Kalamazoo College.
