Western Michigan Captures Third MAC Gymnastics Championship

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Host Western Michigan made history at University Arena Saturday afternoon, capturing the program's first Mid-American Conference gymnastics championship since 1987. The Broncos, who were picked sixth in the preseason poll, were also crowned co-champions in the regular season.

Central Michigan finished second with 193.175 points, while co-regular season champion Kent State finished third (192.700). Eastern Michigan finished fourth (192.075); Northern Illinois took fifth overall (191.225), while Bowling Green (190.850) and Ball State (188.225) rounded out the seven-team field.

WMU's Jennifer Sturgis was tabbed the All-Around champion after compiling a score of 39.100. She also tallied the top score in the balance beam with a 9.850 tally, and owned the top score of 9.875 in the vault competition. Kent State's Carrie Mayle won the floor exercise with a score of 9.850. In the Uneven Parallel Bars, MAC Gymnast of the Year Cherisse Marier had a meet-best score of 9.775.
