Central Michigan Picked to Win Regular Season in Gymnastics

Cleveland- Central Michigan was predicted as the regular season league champion, while Kent State was selected to win 2006 Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Tournament, the MAC office announced today with the release of its preseason poll voted on by the league's head coaches.

CMU (12-5, 6-0 MAC in 2005) was selected to finish first; the Chippewas return eight letterwinners. CMU head coach Jerry Reighard has won a total of 10 MAC titles for the program. Central Michigan's Mattie Crawford was named two-time MAC Specialist of the Week during the regular season.

2005 MAC Tournament Champion Kent State (10-7, 4-2 MAC) was tabbed second. With the loss of four seniors, the Golden Flashes will look to 2005 All-MAC selection Phylicia Robertson for leadership. Robertson won the Floor Exercise with a score of 9.900 at the 2005 MAC championships.

Northern Illinois (7-10, 3-3 MAC) was picked third. The Huskies return 2005 All MAC selection Ashlee Williams along with 11 letterwinners. Williams won the Uneven Bars at last year's Tournament with a score of 9.875. Bowling Green was tabbed fourth. The Falcons return 16 letterwinners including, Jessica Guyer who scored a personal best last year of 9.850 on the Balance Beam.

Eastern Michigan (9-8, 3-3 MAC) was selected fifth despite their third-place finish in last year's regular season. The Eagles return 13 letterwinners and will look to improve on their sixth-place finish at last year's MAC Tournment. Western Michigan (5-14, 1-5 MAC) was picked sixth. The Broncos return 2005 All MAC Cherisse Marier performer, who was also a two-time MAC Gymnast of the Week, last season.

Ball State (3-17, 1-5 MAC) rounded out the poll at seventh. The Cardinals added new head coach in Lisa Simonton. BSU's returning nine letterwinners will look to improve upon their fifth-place finish at last year's championships.

The 2006 Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Tournament will be hosted by Western Michigan University on March 25 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
