Miami Leah Thornton (swimming & diving)
Leah Thornton (So., 4.00, zoology) won three individual events and led off two winning relay teams to spur Miami to the team title at the Miami Invitational last weekend. She broke a meet record in the 200 backstroke Saturday as her time of 1:57.82 knocked nearly three seconds off of her previous personal record. Her performance was a NCAA Division 1 B cut time. Thornton also took first in the 200 fly in 2:01.24 and the 100 back in 54.94 seconds on Friday. In addition, she swam the leadoff leg on two of Miami's winning relays teams as she helped the ‘Hawks capture the 200 medley relay title as her team finished in 1:42.21 while Miami's 400 medley relay clocked in at 3:45.00. Thornton also placed fourth in the 100 fly in 56.08.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
