Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: February 7-13
Akron Steve McNees (basketball)
Steve McNees (Sr., 4.0, education (graduated with education degree)) led the Zips to two cross divisional victories last week, averaging 14.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 5.5 apg. In Akron's 83-71 win over Western Michigan, he scored 12 points while dishing out a career-high seven assists to go with five boards and one steal. His performance moved him into eighth place on the career assists list (284). In the Zips' 75-60 win over Ball State, McNees tied a season high with 16 points while dishing out four dimes and grabbing four boards. He closed the week shooting 52.9 percent from the field (9-for-17), 30.0 percent from long range (3-for-10) and 77.8 percent from the charity stripe (7-for-9).
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
