Hamilton, Ohio - Kent State University continued its torrid play with a second round 294 at the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Tournament to extend its lead to 38 strokes over second place Toledo at the nine-team event staged at Walden Ponds. KSU can wrap up its fifth consecutive title Sunday as the 54-hole tournament concludes.

The Golden Flashes' two-round score of 586 is the lowest in the five years of the tournament, bettering KSU's 590 total last year. Toledo shot a 312 for the second day in a row to vault from fifth place into second. Third place Eastern Michigan, at 626, is two strokes behind the Rockets. Bowling Green fell from second place to sixth with a second round 332 after a 307 yesterday.

KSU dominates the leader board with the top three positions. Senior Veronique Drouin (St. Agnes, Quebec/Davie Academy) paces the field with a one over par 145 (71-74). Trailing Drouin are teammates Martina Gillen (Dublin, Ireland/Maryfield College) with a 146 (73-73) and Gabby Wedding (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) at 147 (76-71).

Western Michigan's Erica Bieniek (Scottville, Mich./Mason County Central) rebounded from a first round 77 to shoot a 71 and climb into fourth place at 148. Eastern Michigan freshman Heather Nolan (Shannon, Ireland) is fifth at 149 (73-76).

Wedding and Bieniek were the only ones in the 45-player field to break par (72) in the second round with scores of 71 on the 5,812-yard course.

Yesterday's individual leader, Toledo senior Katie Schmidt (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne), shot a second round 85 to drop into a tie for 10th place with a 155.

KSU's 586 after 36 holes puts the team into a position to also set a tournament 54-hole record. The 2001 Golden Flashes' squad carded a 887 to set that standard.

Gillen is bidding to become the first-ever three-time MAC medalist at the MAC championships after winning the titles in 2001 and 2002. Gillen also holds the tournament record with a low score of 218 in 2001.

The final round will tee off at 8 a.m. tomorrow. At the conclusion of the tournament, the all-MAC selections will take place, as will Golfer-of-the-Year, Coach-of-the-Year, Freshman-of-the-Year and Sportswomen-of-the-Year.
