Co-Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: April 25-May 1
Eastern Michigan Zack Leonard (baseball) and Kent State Mackenzie Hughes (golf)
Zack Leonard (infielder, Sr., 3.77, exercise science) continues to terrorize opposing pitching staffs as he batted .667 (12-for-18) with four doubles, a homerun and 12 RBI as the Eagles went 4-0 with a road victory at Michigan State and series sweep over Ball State at home. The Canton, Ohio native posted multi-hit performances in each contest including a 5-for-5 effort with a double and two walks in a 17-15, 12-inning win over host Michigan State on April 26. In that win, he also converted all 14 chances in the field in what is believed to be a school-record for assists in a game. He went 7-for-12 in the Ball State series with a double, a homerun, five RBI and two runs scored in the series finale. Leonard is now tied for the EMU all-time mark with 59 career doubles, a record that has stood since 1998. He also extended his career-long hitting streak to 10 games and has raised his batting average 61 points during the streak to what is now a .365-clip.
Mackenzie Hughes (Jr., 3.56, business administration) claimed individual medalist honors with a four-under 284 (70-67-73-74) as Kent State secured its third straight and men's golf record 19th Mid-American Conference Championship on Sunday by posting a 29-stroke victory with a four round total of 1151 (292-271-292-292) at TPC River's Bend. The win marks the third of Hughes' career and second this season. He completed the tournament with a 74 on Sunday making one birdie and three bogeys. Hughes' is now the 20th different Kent State player to claim individual medalist honors after taking third in the tournament each of the past two seasons.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week's competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference's faculty athletic representatives.
