WMU's Erica Bienek wins Golfer of the Week

    Western Michigan's Erica Bienek (Sr., Scottville, Mich.) was named as the Mid-American Conference Women's Golfer of the Week for the sixth week of the spring season. Bieniek claimed her fifth medalist honor of the season and third in the last four events with a first-place finish at the Bronco Invitational, hosted and won by WMU (third team title of 2002-03). Her two-round total of 150 (75-75) was four strokes better than her nearest competitor and included a tourney-high eight birdies. She was one of only three players in the 58-person field to post two rounds below 80. She has now earned at least a share of of first place in three of the four spring tournaments, with the other finish being a tie for third.

    Bowling Green's Shelley Binzel (Sr., Dublin, Ohio) Binzel finished tied for second place at the Bronco Invitational, then won a tiebreaker with WMU's Jenna Walter with a birdie, to win the runner-up medal. Her first-round score of 74 had her leading the tournament after day one. It marked the fourth runner-up finish of her four-year career, with one tournament championship last fall at the Lady Falcon Invitational.

    Kent State's Gabby Wedding (So., Wilmington, Ohio) Wedding led the Golden Flashes to their eighth top-five finish of the year at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational April 12. The team tied for third as Wedding fired rounds of 76-77-74=227 to finish 10th. It was her first top-10 finish of the spring season. Wedding currently ranks third in the MAC in 76.52 stroke average.

    Marshall's Sheena Caron (Fr., Bolt, W. Va.) who finished seventh in the 17-team Bonnie Hover Invitational hosted by James Madison at the Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg, Va. Caron shot rounds of 77, 80, and 76 to finish in seventh at 233.

    Northern Illinois' Jackie Bailey (Fr., Decatur, Ill.) Bailey carded a 161 (79-82) at the WMU Bronco Invitational. The 161 is seven strokes better than Bailey's 36-hole average and the best 36-hole score of her young career. The ninth-place finish she earned is also a career-best, and the best individual performance turned in by a Huskie this season.

    Ohio's Cari Mozingo (Jr., Akron, Ohio) Shot 11-over par 227 to place third at the Bonnie Hoover Intercollegiate (hosted by James Madison). Mozingo posted scores of 80, 72 and 75 during the 54-hold tournament. Her 72 in Saturday's second round was one of only two at par or better in the entire field and was a new spring season low.

    MAC Notes The Golden Flashes continue its streak of top-10 finishes with 10, after tying for third at the Lady Boilermaker Invitational April 13. KSU's final round score of 302 was the fourth lowest total on the day. In the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll (April 14), Kent State moved up to 33rd. This week KSU competes at Ohio State (April 19-20) before defending its MAC Championship April25-27 at Walden Ponds Golf Club in Hamilton, Ohio.
