ATHENS, Ohio - The best of the Mid-American Conference are ready to run on the campus of Ohio University and determine which teams will be crowned the 2009 MAC Men's & Women's Cross Country Champions. The men's 8k race will begin at 11 am on Saturday, with the women's 6k following at noon. Awards will be held approximately 30 minutes after completion of the women's race.
Historically speaking, the most successful men's team has been the Miami RedHawks, who are the owners of 20 conference championships. Since then, Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan have won the last ten titles, with Eastern taking the last four in a row. Last season, the Eagles captured their 14th MAC title since 1972 - the most among any league institution in that time frame. EMU Head coach John Goodridge was named the MAC Coach of the Year, an honor bestowed upon the veteran coach five times since his arrival in Ypsilanti nine seasons ago.
The most successful women's team in conference history has been Ohio, which has won ten total championships. In second and third place are Bowling Green and Western Michigan, with seven and four, respectively. Western Michigan leads the way with seven individual champions, followed closely by Bowling Green and Miami, who each claim five. Miami's women's cross country team made history last season, winning its first-ever Mid-American Conference Championship. Ohio's Annie Beecham won the women's individual title with a MAC record time of 16:56.8
Complete results will be posted following the conclusion of this year's meet. Video interviews with the men's & women's individual winners as well as with the winning coaches will also be available on the MAC website following the meet.
