EMU's Ijah, Kent State's Leppelmeier Named Scholar Athletes of the Week

Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: December 2- 8
Eastern Michigan University Solomon Ijah (Men’s Indoor Track & Field)
Solomon Ijah (Multis, Junior, 3.42, Finance)
Solomon Ijah broke EMU’s heptathlon record Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Findlay Oiler Opener.  His score of 5,323 points eclipsed Kevin Lanier’s 2011 record of 5,224 by nearly 100 points.  Ijah won five-of-seven events, as he dominated the 60m dash in 7.10 seconds, sprinted through the 60m hurdles in 8.35 seconds (.01 seconds shy of the automatic MAC qualifying mark), leapt for a distance of 6.69 meters in the long jump, threw the shot put for 14.30 meters, and cleared 4.40 meters in the pole vaults.  He also cleared 1.88 meters in the high jump and had a sub-2 minute time in the 1,000 meter run, finishing in 2:59.94.

Kent State Jackie Leppelmeier (Track & Field)
Jackie Leppelmeier  (Throws, Junior, 3.87, Exercise Science)
Jackie Leppelmeier was in mid-season form at the season-opening Golden Flash Gala this past weekend, posting the conference’s top marks in both the weight throw and shot put. On Friday, Leppelmeier had a dominant showing in the weight throw, winning by nearly 11 feet with a toss of 67’-01.25”, which ranked 4th nationally on the opening weekend of competition. She followed that with a runner-up performance in the shot put48’-10.25”, which was the best among collegiate competitors.
