BSU's Wenning, Ohio's Gilleland Named Scholar Athlete of the Week

Male Scholar Athlete of the Week: August 26- September 1
Ball State Keith Wenning (Football)
Keith Wenning (Quarterback, Senior, 3.340, Business) accounted for five touchdowns in Ball State's season opener vs. Illinois State. Wenning threw for three touchdowns and rushed for two TDs. It was the second time in Wenning's career he has accounted for five scores in a game. He tied for the Ball State school record with five TD passes vs. Kent State in 2012. It was the 12th time in his career he has thrown for at least three touchdowns.  Wenning also passed for 340 yards against Illinois State, which marked the seventh time in his career he has passed for over 300 yards in a game. The 340 yards marked the 11th best single-game effort in Ball State history and Wenning now owns four of the school's top 11 single-game passing marks.
 
Female Scholar Athlete of the Week: August 26- September 1
Ohio Abby Gilleland (Volleyball)
Abby Gilleland (Setter, Sophomore, 3.812, Nursing) was named the Oregon Classic Most Valuable Player after leading the Bobcats to a 3-0 record, the tournament championship and an undefeated 9-0 set record. The sophomore setter averaged 10.22 assists/set while also contributing 1.3 kills/set, 1.8 points/set and 2.0 digs/set over the three-match event. In the opener against Bryant on Aug. 30, Gilleland notched a match-high 29 assists while adding four kills on five attempts (.800) and five digs. Against Eastern Washington on Aug. 31, the preseason All-MAC selection led all participants with 27 assists while adding two service aces, three kills and five digs. In the tournament championship match against eighth-ranked Oregon, Gilleland played her best match of 2013, posting a season-best 36 assists (12.0/set) to go along with five kills on 14 attempts (.357), eight digs, two service aces and a block assist. She was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
