MAC Announces Golfers of the Week

Women’s Golfer of the Week 
Sarah Johnson, Eastern Michigan 
Senior, Wixom, Mich./ Walled Lake Central 
Eastern Michigan University senior Sarah Johnson fired a final round 69 en route to third-place finish individually as well as leading the EMU women's golf team to a third-place showing at the Indiana Invitational, April 14, at Indiana University Golf Course. Johnson improved throughout the tournament, carding rounds of 79, 75 and 69 for a total score of 223 (+7).  Her final round of 3-under par 69 on the 6,142-yard, par-72 Indiana University Golf Course was the lowest of her career as well as the best round by an EMU golfer this season.

Men’s Golfer of the Week
Wes Gates, Bowling Green
Senior, Novi, Michigan / Northville 
Wes Gates won his third tournament of the season, scoring a 213 at the Mount St. Mary’s Spring Invitational, besting the field by three shots. The senior opened with a 67 and followed that up with a 71-75. With the win, Gates becomes the first Falcon in school history to win three tournaments in a single season and is now tied with Matt Schneider for most tournament wins in the history of BGSU men’s golf.

Senior Casey Olsen, Eastern Michigan 
Okemos, Mich.-Okemos/ Oakland University
Battling cold, blustery conditions, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished tied for third place with the University of Toledo at the Detroit Golf Club Invitational Friday, April 12, with a 36-hole score of 725 (378-347). The tournament featured a unique format with each team competing with six golfers, while using five scores. Senior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) notched his second consecutive top five showing, posting rounds of 72 and 70 for a total of 142 in a tie for fourth.
 
Kyle Kmiecik, Kent State 
Junior, Avon, Ohio/ St. Ignatius
Junior Kyle Kmiecik (Avon, Ohio) shot a 6-over, 216 to finish tied for 14th at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, hosted at the University of Texas Golf Club. Kmiecik’s par 5 average of 4.44 was aided by five birdies and was tied for fourth among all golfers in the 72-man field that featured five Top 25 teams and four golfers among the top 20 in Golfweeek’s rankings.

Frida Fougberg, Akron 
Freshman Partille, Sweden / Lerums Gymnasium
Frida Fougberg led the Zips at the Indiana Invitational over the weekend, finishing the event in a tie for 16th place. The top-25 finish was the team-best fifth for Fougberg this season. She closed the event with a three-round score of 229 (+13). Fougberg opened the event by posting rounds of 1-under 71 and 8-over 80 for a score of 7-over 151. Her round of 1-under 71 was a career-low. She concluded play on Sunday with a score of 6-over 78 to help Akron to a ninth-place finish.
 
Amy Ruthenberg, Bowling Green 
Senior, East Lansing, MI/ Okemos 
Amy Ruthenberg finished tied for ninth among 92 golfers at the Dolores Black Falcon Invitational with a 36-hole score of 158. The senior captain opened with a 77, battling high winds, a steady rain and even some sleet to lead the entire field after 18 holes. Ruthenberg would complete the tournament with an 81 to secure her fifth-best 36 hole score of her career.
 
Angela Codian, Ohio University 
Freshman, Massillon, Ohio/ Jackson 
Angela had a strong weekend for the Ohio University women’s golf team, earning the team’s top finish at the 2013 Dolores Black Falcon Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio. The freshman shot a two-round score of 158, finishing the tournament in a tie for ninth place in the field of 91 golfers. Codian showed improvement throughout the tournament, dropping six strokes from her first-round score to shoot a 76 on Sunday.
