Akron Reaches Seventh Consecutive Championship Game

Akron 62, Kent State 59
CLEVELAND, OHIO--The top-seeded Akron Zips survived against their rivals, the fourth-seeded Kent State Golden Flashes, 62-59. The Zips advance to the MAC Championship game for the sixth straight year. Akron will play the winner of the Ohio vs. Western Michigan game Saturday at 6:30 on ESPN2.
 
Trailing by two with 15 seconds to, Randal Holt missed two potential game-winning three-pointers. Akron’s Brian Walsh made his only two free throw attempts of the game with six seconds left to seal the deal for Akron.
 
To start the second half Zeke Marshall came out of the locker room on fire, hitting his first three shots to give the Zips an eight point cushion. The MAC Defensive Player of the Year finished with seven blocks, to go with his 18 points and 10 rebounds.
 
The Golden Flashes used a 13-2 run in the second half to retake the lead 46-43 with 11:10 to play. Kent State held a 57-54 lead with under three minutes to go, but Akron would close the game out on an 8-2 run.
 
Randal Holt led the Golden Flashes with 17 points. Chris Evans grabbed eight rebounds and six points before fouling out with 56 seconds left to play.
