MAC Announces Softball Players and Pitchers of the Week

MAC East Player of the Week
Alyssa Wolfe, Ohio, IF
Junior, Junction City, Ohio/New Lexington
Alyssa had a tremendous weekend for Ohio Softball, hitting .364 in five games at the 2013 University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Frost Classic. The junior’s four hits came at clutch times during Ohio’s games, as she slugged at a rate of 1.091. Wolfe hit two home runs during the weekend, one of which (in the win against Niagara) was the first of her career. Her second home run of the tournament was a game-winner against Tennessee Tech, pulling the ‘Cats from a one-run deficit to a one-run advantage in the top of the seventh inning. Wolfe only struck out two times in 12 plate appearances and ran the bases quite well, scoring five times throughout the weekend. Her seven RBI tied for the team lead throughout the weekend and had a large role in Ohio going 4-1 at the tournament. 
MAC East Pitcher of the Week
Lauren McClary, Ohio, P
Sophomore, Pasadena, Texas/Pasadena Memorial
Lauren had a strong weekend for the Bobcats, posting a 2-1 record in three appearances at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga Frost Classic. The sophomore threw a complete game shutout of North Carolina Central on Friday, allowing just two hits and while posting a WHIP of 0.40 in five innings of work. McClary struck out six batters in this game. Following her lone loss of the tournament against Lipscomb, McClary bounced back in a big way, throwing 4.2 innings of one-run softball against Boston College. Lauren allowed just two hits in the game against the Eagles and posted a 1.50 ERA in this contest. Throughout the entire weekend, McClary posted an impressive 3.00 ERA, struck out 11 batters, and allowed just nine hits and six walks.
MAC West Player of the Week
Jennifer Gilbert, Ball State, LF
Junior, McKinney, Texas/McKinney
Reigning MAC West Division Player of the Week Jennifer Gilbert picked up where she left off opening weekend, belting out eight hits and team-best .533 (8-for-15) batting average to help the Cardinals post a 3-2 record at the 2013 UCA Tournament hosted by Central Arkansas … Of the eight hits, four were for multiple bases, including two more home runs … With the two home runs, Gilbert upped her career total to 38 which ties for the top spot in program history … Gilbert also finished the week with a .650 on base percentage by also drawing five walks over the five games, including three intentional walks … On the base paths, Gilbert was also a perfect 1-for-1 in stolen base attempts.
MAC West Co-Pitchers of the Week
Jessica Sturm, Northern Illinois, P
Sophomore, Wichita, Kan./Goddard
Jessica Sturm, who improved to 3-2 on the season, posted a 2-1 record in her four appearances at the FAU “Strike-Out Cancer” Tournament in Boca Raton. She went the distance in NIU’s 4-2 eight-inning victory over North Florida. Sturm scattered nine hits and two walks by the Ospreys.  She allowed  three runs, one earned, on six hits and two base on balls in the Huskies’ 7-3 victory over Florida Atlantic. She struck out a career-high six batters in NIU’s 3-0 setback to Towson.
Mackenzie Shepeck, Western Michigan, P
Sophomore, Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone
Mackenzie Shepeck had back to back starts with a career high eight strikeouts and registered her first career complete game.  Her previous career high in strikeouts was four against Villanova on March 17, 2012.
Other Nominees:
Kelsey Schifferdecker, Ball State, P
Freshman, Belton, Mo./Belton
Freshman Kelsey Schifferdecker turned in a pair of dominating performances in guiding the Cardinals to wins over Grambling State and Arkansas-Pine Bluff at the UCA Tournament … Schifferdecker finished the week with a 0.70 ERA by allowing just one earned run over 10 innings … She held opposing batters to a .189 average while striking out nine batters and issuing just two walks … In her first outing, Schifferdecker limited the Tigers to just five hits and one earned run over six innings of work, while striking out five batters … She followed with her first career shutout, pitching the first four innings in a five-inning run rule … Over her four innings of work, Schifferdecker limited the Golden Lions to just two hits, both singles, and did not surrender a single walk … She also struck out four batters.
Nicole Gremillion, Northern Illinois, OF
Junior, Missouri City, Tx./Elkins
Nicole Gremillion led the way for the NIU softball team at the FAU “Strike-Out Cancer” Tournament went 9-for-17 batting .529 in five starts. The junior outfielder provided the power for the Huskie offense slugging .706 with a triple, double, four runs scored and three runs batted in. Gremillion, who is hitting .364 on the season, was 3-for-4 with an RBI and scored two runs in the Huskies’ 4-2 win over North Florida. In NIU’s 7-3 win over Florida Atlantic, she was 1-for-4, with a double and two runs scored in the lead-off spot. Gremillion’s best performance of the weekend came in NIU’s 13-7 loss to Providence. She hit a triple and went 3-for-4, and drove in two runs.
Loren Nagy, Western Michigan, IF
Freshman, Kalamazoo, Mich./Mattawan
Loren Nagy led the Broncos with five hits in 14 at bats, hitting .357.  The freshman hit a team best three doubles and became the 34th player in program history to hit two doubles in a game.  Nagy had at least one hit in four of the five games this past weekend.  She also had 40 defensive put outs with no errors.
