MAC Women's Tennis Weekend Results

 

 

 

AKRON, Ohio – Angelina Jogasuria posted a three-set, last-match-on-court comeback win at No. 1 singles to give The University of Akron women's tennis team a 4-3 decision over 69th-ranked Oregon on Sunday at LaTuchie Tennis Center. The Zips have won in four-straight outings and improved to 5-5 in dual-match play, while ending the Ducks' eight-match win steak.

 

Jogasuria got the best of Patricia Skowronski 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 to clinch match point and give UA its first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 56 Dartmouth 6-1 on Feb. 24, 2012. After falling behind 3-2 in the second set, Jogasuria rallied to go up 4-3, then was down 5-4 before taking the 7-5 win. She came back from a 2-1 deficit in the third set. Skowronski is ranked 101st nationally in singles.

 

After claiming the doubles point thanks to wins at the first and third flights, Akron fell behind 3-1 in the match scoring as Oregon won in order at Nos. 6, 2 and 3 singles in straight sets. Ksenia Berestetska helped the Zips pull to within 3-2 when she posted a 6-4, 6-0 win over Lana Buttner at No. 5, and then Olga Shkundina took No. 4 singles 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 to make the score 3-all.

 

In doubles, UA's pair of Prang Pantusart and Jogasuria, ranked 43rd nationally, won 8-4 at No. 1 over Skowronski and Nicole Long. At No. 3, the Zips' duo of Shkundina and Berestetska took care of Sofia Hager and Brooke Hughes, 8-5.

 

The Ducks (8-1) represented the sixth nationally-ranked foe the Zips have faced this season.

 

Akron takes to the road next weekend, competing at New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and Columbia on Sunday at 11 a.m.

AKRON, Ohio – Olga Shkundina posted a three-set, last-match-on-court win at No. 4 singles to lift the Akron women's tennis team to a 4-3 victory over visiting East Tennessee State on Friday afternoon at LaTuchie Tennis Center.

 

Shkundina topped Lyn Yee Choo 7-6 (7), 6-7 (4), 6-4 to clinch match point and improve the Zips dual-match record to 4-5 and extend its win streak to three matches.

 

Akron trailed 2-0 after dropping the doubles point, with losses at the second and third flights, and giving up No. 3 singles, but made it 2-all with wins in order at Nos. 6 and 5 by Madison Cohen and Ksenia Berestetska, respectively. Cohen defeated Sofia Espana 6-2, 6-3, while Berestetska got Salma Dahbi, 6-4, 6-0.

 

UA's Prang Pantusart then lost at No. 2 to Antonia Kolovou 6-4, 6-2, but Angelina Jogasuria tied the match scoring at 3-all with a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win versus Giulia Andreazza at No. 1. That set the scene for Shkundina's match winner.

Akron returns to the court on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET to face No. 69 Oregon.

 

Zips Notebook: Akron's No. 1 doubles pair of Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria, ranked 43rd nationally, posted an 8-1 win today and improved to 7-0 this season ... Milwaukee, Wis. - The Ball State women's tennis team dropped to 7-3 on the season after suffering a 5-2 road loss at Marquette Sunday afternoon.

 

The Cardinals lost all three of their doubles matches and would enter singles play down 1-0 to Marquette.   At No. 3 doubles, Lauren Pickrel and Paola Rodriguez almost beat Aina Hernandez and Aleeza Kanner by a score of 8-7 (7-5).

 

In singles action, Courtney Wild captured a straight set victory over Ana Pimienta winning 6-3, 6-3.  Courtney Earnest dropped her first set at the No. 2 position to Rocio Diaz but came back to win the match 6-7 (7-2), 6-3, 10-5.  With the wins Earnest improves to 9-1 on the season while Wild owns an 8-2 singles mark.

 

The Ball State women's tennis team continues non-conference action on the road Saturday against Youngstown State.  The match will be played in Cleveland, Ohio at 5 p.m.

 

 

 

 

WILLIAMSVILLE, NY – Having two matches cancelled last week was not enough to slow down the University at Buffalo women's team as the Bulls defeated ASA College, 6-1, to remain undefeated at 4-0.

 

Playing shorthanded, ASA had to forfeit the contest at third doubles and the Bulls quickly won the doubles point after a pair of 8-2 victories.  The team of Tanvi Shah and Miranda Podlas remained undefeated at first doubles in duel play, while Marta Stoyanova and Laura Fernandez also picked up a win at second doubles.

 

The Bulls picked up a victory via forfeit at sixth singles to go up 2-0 in the match.  Podlas won her contest at second singles 6-1, 6-0 and then Tamara Markovic clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fourth singles.  Fernandez won her fourth straight duel match at third singles with a 6-1, 6-3 victory and freshman Gopkia Kapoor won at fifth singles 6-1, 6-1, playing in her first match of the spring.

 

Buffalo remains home next weekend for a pair of matches at the Miller Tennis Center.  UB will host Temple on Saturday at 1:00 pm and Binghamton on Sunday at 1:00 pm.

HAMILTON, Ohio -- Miami opened an early 3-0 lead, then had to sweat out two close matches for a 5-2 victory over Middle Tennessee Sunday at Riverside Athletic Club. The Blue Raiders won back-to-back points and seemed headed toward deciding third sets, butChristine Guerrazzi ralled in both sets of her match to secure the win.

 

The RedHawks (3-5) used three brand-new doubles pairings to sweep doubles for the first time this season. Chloe Heerden and Christiana Raymond won the first six games enroute to an 8-1 victory at No. 3. Nimisha Mohan and Ana Rajkovic had a similar run, breaking a 1-1 tie by taking five straight games during an 8-2 triumph. At No. 1, Alix Thurman and Guerrazzi opened a 4-1 advantage, and later led 7-4, but Middle Tennessee won three straight to force a tiebreaker. Miami won the first two points and five of the first six, closing out the match 8-7 (7-2). 

 

Thurman used a powerful serve to cruise past her opponent at No. 2, registering double-digit aces in a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Heerden posted the same scores in her win at No. 6, giving the RedHawks a 3-0 lead.

 

Middle Tennessee closed to within 3-2 with victories at No. 5 (6-1, 6-3) and No. 3 (6-4, 6-4) and forced a third set at No. 1 , but Guerrazzi was able to clinch the victory. She trailed 5-2 in her first set before rallying for a 7-5, win, then came back from a 4-1 deficit in the second for another 7-5 decision.

 

Raymond closed out the match by taking her decisive third set 6-2 after splitting the first two, 6-4 and 3-6.

 

Miami now plays seven straight matches on the road, beginning Tuesday afternoon at Kentucky.

 

 

 

 

INDIANAPOLIS – Northern Illinois completed a sweep of its three weekend women’s tennis matches with a 6-1 victory over Butler Sunday at the Butler Bubble in Indianapolis.

 

The Huskies improved to 8-1 in winning their fifth straight match.  With wins over IUPUI, Indianapolis and Butler over the last three days, NIU has won all seven of its road matches on the year.  

 

“For the third straight day, we played very well and very tough,” said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. “It was nice to see.  Playing three matches in three days row is not an easy thing and Butler is a good team that is well coached. Now we need to get ready for Chicago State. It will be nice to play at home and be in a familiar setting.”

 

NIU took the doubles point for the seventh time this spring as Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre claimed a tight 8-6 win at No. 1 to  keep their undefeated record intact, and Mary Malkin and Cristina Alvarez teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles. 

 

Youel also extended her spring singles winning streak at the No. 1 position to nine with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Butler’s Stephanie McLoughlin.  The Huskies’ No. 4, 5 and 6 singles players – Malkin, Alvarez and Stephanie McDonald – completed their undefeated weekends in singles with victories over Butler.  With a 3-0 weekend, Malkin improved her singles mark to 8-1 this season. 

 

Northern Illinois returns to its indoor home at Rockford’s Boylan High School on Friday, Feb. 22 with a 4:30 p.m. match versus Chicago State.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Northern Illinois women’s tennis team continued its roll through February Saturday in Indianapolis with a 7-0 victory over the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds at the UIndy Tennis Center.  The win improved NIU’s spring dual match record to 7-1, including a perfect 6-0 mark away from home.   

 

“We looked a little tired but the discipline was great,” said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell. “That is what carried us today. We had our game plan and we stuck to it.  It was good to be able to get Maria and Ilse some match experience.  No rest for the weary with Butler [Sunday].

 

Northern Illinois swept the three doubles matches for the third time this year with the No. 1 duo of Nelle Youel and Arantza De La Torre and the No. 2 pair of Haley Dekkinga and Stephanie McDonald winning by identical 8-2 scores.  

 

The tightest singles match of the day came at the No. 6 spot where the Huskies’ Stephanie McDonald won a second-set tiebreaker to complete a 6-2, 7-6 win over Indianapolis’ Alex Covington.  In addition to sweeps in the six singles and three doubles matches, NIU freshman Maria Rozo and junior Ilse Pacheco each claimed a superset (to eight games) victory in exhibition action.

INDIANAPOLIS – Northern Illinois lost just nine games in its five singles wins and claimed the doubles point to defeat IUPUI 6-1 in women’s tennis action Friday night at the West Indy Racquet Club.  The victory was Northern Illinois’ third straight and improved the Huskies’ spring dual meet record to 6-1. 

 

Northern Illinois’ No. 6 singles player, Stephanie McDonald, posted the “double bagel” win, while Cristina Alvarez lost just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5.   

 

NIU No. 1 player Nelle Youel continued her undefeated string this spring with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Shelby Hullett and paired with Arantza De La Torre for an 8-1 win to keep her perfect record intact at No. 1 doubles. Haley Dekkinga won her singles match at No. 2 for the sixth time in seven matches.   

 

Mary Malkin also improved her singles record to 6-1 on the season with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles.  Malkin and Alvarez teamed up to help NIU win the doubles point with an 8-2 triumph at No. 3 doubles.       

 

“We showed better focus and played intelligently today,” said NIU Head Coach Ryun Ferrell.   “We are working on setting up a game plan and sticking to it.  I saw some things out there today, but we still have a ways to go.”

GRIFFITH, IN - The Toledo women's tennis team lost a tough battle for the doubles point, and could only gather two singles wins at the top of its lineup in a 5-2 non-conference loss to Illinois-Chicago in a dual match at Match Point Tennis Saturday afternoon. 

 

"This was an incredibly close match against an experienced team," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "We worked hard for the doubles point, but did not close when we needed to. I'm proud of the way we went out and battled in singles."

 

UT led early on in doubles play, but UIC mounted a comeback to capture wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 flights to jump out to a 1-0 lead heading into singles play. Senior Silvia Carvajal and freshman Katelyn Nguyen dropped a close 8-6 contest at the No. 1 doubles position, followed by a narrow 8-7 (7-2) pro-set loss at No. 2 by the freshman pair of Mackenzie Bowman and Emily Mazzola. The sophomore tandem of Lexy Pitt and Pia Rygh notched an 8-6 victory at the third doubles flight.

 

The Rockets posted wins in both the No. 1 and No. 2 singles flights until the Flames took control of the match through the rest of the lineup. Junior Chrissy Coffman won in straight sets at the top flight, while Rygh recorded a come-from-behind victory at No. 2 by scores of 6-7 (7-1), 7-5, 10-6. The match turning point came at the third singles flight when Nguyen lost to her counterpart in three sets, including tiebreakers in both the second and third frames. Carvajal's match at the final singles flight also extended to a third set, but UIC grinded out the win 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

 

"I'm optimistic about the potential of this young team," Mauntler said. "I see key players getting better each time they step on the court, which is what we are looking for at this time of the year."

 

The Midnight Blue & Gold will travel to Pittsburgh for a 1:30 p.m. match at Duquesne next Friday. Following that match, UT will take off on its Spring Break trip to Orlando, FL on March 4-9.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Western Michigan women's tennis team dominated both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday, executing a clean sweep of both singles and doubles play in defeating both the IUPUI Jaguars and Bradley Braves 7-0 at West Hills Athletic Club.  With the wins, the Broncos improve to 6-3 on the season.

 

Indeed, the Broncos were perfect in their dual matches on Saturday, failing to drop a single match to either opponent. Three players went 4-0 overall on Saturday, including Nini Sujashvili, who earned two No. 1 singles wins, a No. 1 doubles win, and a No. 2 doubles win.  Jill Pastunink and Kelsey King also turned the trick, teaming together for a pair of doubles wins and each winning their respective singles matches.  Kathleen Hawkins went 3-0, including two No. 1 singles wins,  and Maggie Remynse and Caroline Aleck also posted 3-0 marks.

 

The Broncos opened the day with a relatively quick victory over the Jaguars, dominating two doubles matches before the third was left unfinished.  Sujashvili and Hawkins showed they could re-spark the good chemistry they displayed last season, downing Vanessa Whyte and Rachael Bridegroom 8-0 in the No. 1 singles match.  Pastunink and King teamed up for their first win of the day, beat Jesika Bays and Jaclyn Hyman 8-1, clinching the doubles point for the Broncos.

 

Sujashvili was the first Bronco off the court in singles play, defeating Whyte 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 singles match to make it a 2-0 advantage.  Aleck was not far behind, beating Bays 6-0, 6-1, and freshman Hailey Shanahan had the privilege of clinching the match victory with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Hyman in the No. 6 singles match.  King rebounded from a three-set singles loss the night before to beat Bridegroom 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 5 match, Remynse came back from a set down to beat Shelby Hullett in the No. 3 singles match, and Pastunink wrapped the scoring with a battle, winning a two-setter with Bobbi Modesto 6-4, 6-3.

 

The second match of the day proved to be as positive as the first, as the Broncos carried over the positive momentum from their win over the Jaguars into a victory over the Bradley Braves.  Sujashvili teamed with Remynse in doubles to get things rolling, downing Sarah Rodefeld and Cassia Wojtalik 8-1 in the No. 2 match to open play.  Pastunink and King earned their second doubles win of the day, beating Kennedy Scott and Carly Miles 8-5 in the No. 3 doubles match to clinch the doubles point.  Hawkins and Aleck closed the scoring with a win in the No. 1 doubles match, cruising past Adele Henke and Corey Mattson 8-2.

 

Aleck gave the Broncos a 2-0 edge with a win over Wojtalik in the No. 5 singles match, winning 6-1, 6-0, and Remynse put the Broncos in prime position with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Elizabeth Przystawski in the No. 4 singles match.  King clinched the match win for the Broncos in the No. 6 singles match, downing Miles 6-1, 6-1, and Pastunink finished just after with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Rodefeld in the No. 3 match.  Hawkins and Sujashvili rounded out the scoring for the Broncos on the day, winning the Nos. 2 and 1 singles matches, respectively, with Sujashvili earning a hard-fought win over Henke 6-4, 6-3.
