Co-Female Scholar Athlete of the Week: January 21 – January 27, 2013
Miami University Leah Thornton (W. Swimming and Diving)
Leah Thornton (Backstroke, Senior, 3.60, Zoology), in Miami's dual meet victory at defending MAC champion Toledo (167.5 to 132.5), Thornton was nearly unbeatable. The senior from Helena, Ala. won both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events and was the lead-off swimmer for the RedHawks' winning 200 medley relay squad. Her 400 freestyle relay squad placed third. Thornton, a first-team All-MAC selection in 2012 and the MAC's reigning 100 backstroke champion, had winning times of 56.87 in the 100 and 2:02.76 in the 200. Altogether, she contributed 18 individual points and 14 relay points in the team victory. Thornton carries a cumulative grade-point average of 3.6 while majoring in zoology.
Co-Female Scholar Athlete of the Week: January 21 – January 27, 2013
Bowling Green State University Emily Reuland (W. Tennis)
Emily Reuland (Backstroke, Junior, 3.92, Pre-Exercise Science) was a perfect 4-0 as the BGSU tennis team won a pair of matches in Chicagoland over the weekend. Reuland won matches at the top singles and top doubles flights as the Falcons posted a 6-1 win over Drake and a 7-0 victory over Chicago State.  In Saturday’s Drake match, Reuland teamed with classmate Nikki Chiricosta for an 8-2 doubles win, then downed the Bulldogs’ Nell Boyd at the top singles flight.  The next morning vs. CSU, Reuland and senior Maddy Eccleston posted an 8-3 doubles win, and the junior then topped Karyn Emeralda in straight sets.  On the season, Reuland has an overall record of 28-12, ranking her second on the team in wins.  Her 13-5 singles record ties her for the BGSU lead, and she has the second-best doubles mark on the squad, with a 15-7 record.  Just a junior, she already ranks 20th in school history in career singles wins, with 61.  Reuland is 23rd all-time at the school with 56 doubles victories, and her career total of 117 combined wins ties her for 21st at BGSU.  The Falcons are 3-1 this season, and BGSU has won three consecutive matches after a season-opening loss on the road against No. 19 Notre Dame.

The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
