Buffalo Wrestling Loses at Ohio
ATHENS, OH - The Buffalo wrestling team fell to 1-2 in the Mid-American Conference dual season Saturday night, losing 26-13 at Ohio. The Bobcats (5-5, 3-2 MAC) scored bonus points in four of its six total wins to pull away after the Bulls (1-8, 1-2 MAC) earned an early lead in the match.
With the dual starting at 133, Ohio took the opening match but Buffalo ran back out front 7-3 after wins by Erik Galloway at 141 and Blake Roulo at 149. Galloway jumped up on Kagan Squire 6-2 after the first period and cruised to the win with a third period and riding time point to boost his score. Roulo scored the team's lone bonus points of the day, winning a 14-1 major decision over Gavin Moore. He scored a quick takedown and scored three back points in the first period, and starting the second period on top, Roulo turned Moore twice for six back points in the second period and took him down again in the third for the big win. This continues a hot streak for the sophomore, who has won nine of the past 11 matches (five of which have come in duals).
A pin for Ohio at 157 put the host Bobcats back up 9-7, but the lead was short lived thanks to a 4-0 win for Mark Lewandowski, who is on a hot streak of his own. The win was the sixth in a row and the eleventh in the past 14 matches. The win was number 105 for the senior, who now sits alone in fifth place on the all-time wins list after snapping a tie with Mark Budd. The decision gave Buffalo a short-lived 10-9 lead in the overall match. Ohio would respond with four straight wins, including three straight bonus-point wins from 184 to heavyweight.
The dual would come to an end with a win from Max Soria. After falling behind 4-1 in the first period to Kevon Powell, Soria earned an escape, then broke Powell with a takedown and two back points to turn the first three minutes into a 6-4 lead. He would keep the two-point lead through the second period after making two escapes to counter Powell's takedown, and iced the win with a third-period takedown for the 10-6 win.
Buffalo will now return home for the final two MAC duals, with Kent State coming to Alumni Arena next Sunday at 1 pm.

No. 11 Chippewas Dominate Kent State for Share of MAC Title
MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan claimed at least a share of the Mid-American Conference regular season title in dominating fashion Sunday afternoon, defeating rival Kent State, 27-8.
The Chippewas (11-3, 4-0 MAC) claimed eight of the 10 matches in the dual, including the first six, en route to earning their 13th regular season title and eighth in 10 seasons.
CMU can clinch an outright title with a win over in-state foe Eastern Michigan on Friday, February 8.
A pair of top 10 wrestlers in seniors Christian Cullinan and Scotti Sentes opened the dual with decisions, but it was junior Scott Mattingly that got the crowd on its feet and showed the Golden Flashes (6-4, 2-1 MAC) it was not their day.
Mattingly fell behind Luke Kern on a takedown just a minute into the first period, but was able to score a reversal just 25 seconds later to tie the match. The junior was then able to work Kern to his back and claimed the first-period fall at the 2:12 mark to put the Chippewas up 12 to negative one.
Senior Donnie Corby claimed a 8-2 decision at 149 pounds with a takedown in each of the three periods, while redshirt freshman Lucas Smith and sophomore Mike Ottinger claimed decisions at 157 and 165 pounds.
After their first loss of the day at 174 pounds, No. 2 senior Ben Bennett got the Chippewas back on track with a 1-0 decision at 184 pounds over No. 16 Casey Newburgh. Jarod Trice, ranked No. 6 in the country at the heavyweight division, closed the contest with a 2-0 decision over Keith Witt.
The Chippewas are back in action next Sunday when they host Old Dominion at 2 p.m.

Wrestling Downs Northern Illinois, 22-17, for First MAC Victory
Sulzer and Whitenburg record pins for victorious Eagles
DeKALB, Ill. – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team won its first Mid-American Conference bout of the season Saturday, Jan. 26, on the road against Northern Illinois University, 22-17. The Eagles scored bonus points in three matches and recorded a pair of pins while improving to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in MAC action.
Saturday's match saw the lead switch hands four times, with redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg's pin at 197 lbs. ultimately sealing the victory for the Eagles. The Huskies (7-6; 0-4 MAC) remained winless in conference bouts and lost to Eastern Michigan for a second straight season.
"I am really proud of the guys not because we won the dual, but because of our fight,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “I am also happy we gout out of there healthy and injury free.”
Freshman Alexander Calandrino got the Eagles started off with a 4-0 shutout decision over Nickalas Harrison at 125 lbs. The win was Calandrino's 20th of the season overall and gave EMU a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies pulled off victories in each of the next three matches with a major decision at 133 lbs. and decisions at 141 lbs. and 149 lbs. to take a 10-3 lead four bouts in.
Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer turned in six huge points at 157 lbs. when he pinned Andrew Morse at the 2:06 mark of the match and brought the Eagles back to within a point, 10-9. “Aaron got the team rolling again with that fall against a talented kid,” remarked DelPorto. “He exploded to the position to get the pin and his opponent could not move.”
Then at 165 lbs. freshman Jacob Davis put the Green and White back in the lead, 13-10, with a 9-1 major decision against Dan Burk. Davis took a 5-0 lead into the third period and benefited from an extra riding time point at the end of the match to gain the eight-point edge and record the major-decision win.
Northern Illinois would regain the lead briefly following the 174 lbs. match as Matt Mougin won a 10-2 major decision against redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla.
At 184 lbs. redshirt junior Phillip Joseph's 13-7 decision against Brian Loughlin put the Eagles on top for good and Whitenburg's pin over Parker Settecase at the 5:54 mark of the 197 lbs. match clinched the win for EMU.
“Phillip and Whit came through once again to seal the win.” said DelPorto. “I think Whit has a little chip on his shoulder. He needs to continue to on this mission and get himself to the NCAAs. That would be career changing for a guy like him.”
Jared Torrence won the final bout of the afternoon for the Huskies at heavyweight, but the Eagles still walked away 22-17 winners.
The Eagles continue their trek through the MAC schedule when they host Kent State University Friday, Feb. 1, at Bowen Field House. The dual-meet begins at 7 p.m.

Kilgore Breaks Career Pins Record in Flashes' Loss at Central Michigan
MT. PLEASANT, Mich. –Senior Dustin Kilgore (Berea, Ohio) broke a Kent State record with his 47th career pin in the Golden Flashes' 27-8 loss to Central Michigan Sunday at McGuirk Arena. The Chippewas were difficult to score on throughout most of the day, winning 1-0 decisions at 125 and 184, a 2-0 decision at heavyweight and a 3-2 decision at 165.
"There were a lot of really close matches so it was not as bad as the final score may look," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "Central's style is not very exciting, but they're very good at what they do. And they're especially tough to beat at their place."
Kilgore improved to 30-0 on the year with his Division I leading 15th pin of the year just 1:43 into the first period. Each of his last eight opponents in dual meets have not made it past the second period. Kilgore ran his winning streak to 49 matches and his dual meet winning streak to 59.
The Golden Flashes got a victory at 174. Redshirt freshman Sam Wheeler (Copley, Ohio) knocked off No. 23 Craig Kelliher 5-2 behind takedowns in the first and second periods.
"Sam did a really good job of getting that first period takedown," Andrassy said. "As soon as you score that first takedown against them, it forces them to come out get you. And that's more of our style.
"If we're able to wrestle our style at the MAC Tournament, I think a lot of these matches could have different outcomes."
Seniors Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio), Stevie Mitcheff (Lorain, Ohio) and Keith Witt (Oak Harbor, Ohio) did not allow takedowns, but all dropped close bout against Top 10 opponents. Mitcheff and Newburg each allowed third period escapes in 1-0 losses, while Witt allowed an escape and riding time.
Redshirt freshman Tyler Buckwalter (Mill Hall, Pa.) made his dual meet debut, dropping a 3-2 decision to Mike Ottinger. A second period takedown made the difference at 165.
Sophomore 165-pounder Caleb Marsh (Marysville, Ohio) and redshirt freshman 149-pounder Nick Carr (Fayette, Pa.) each sat out with injuries, but are expected to return to the starting lineup soon.
The Golden Flashes return to Mid-American Conference action Friday, visiting Eastern Michigan, before heading to Buffalo on Sunday, Feb. 3.
Missouri:
Tigers Rout Huskies, Get First Win in MAC Conference
Mizzou won 9 of 10 matches in their 39-3 win against Northern Illinois.
DEKALB, Ill. - Coming off their first loss of the season, the fifth-ranked Tigers blasted the Northern Illinois Huskies 39-3 on Saturday. Mizzou won in every weight class but one, with six of those wins reaching bonus point land.
For the first time in a month, the Tigers welcomed junior Alan Waters back to the starting lineup. Waters has been perfect so far this year, and has been a huge asset in dual meets especially at the top of the lineup. Missouri's 125-pounder kicked off Saturday's dual with a pin over Nick Harrison of NIU. Waters took a quick 4-1 lead in the first period before getting Harrison flat on his back at 2:27.
Senior Nathan McCormick remained undefeated in dual meets this season with a decision over Nick Smith. McCormick tallied three takedowns in the 8-2 win, two of which came in the first period. After two weight classes, the Tigers had built a comfortable 9-0 lead.
The Huskies picked up their only three points of the dual at 141 pounds. Kevin Fanta of NIU took a 2-0 lead after one period. Mizzou senior Nicholas Hucke closed the gap to one in the second, but an escape and takedown in the third by Fanta decided the bout. Fanta won 6-1 with riding time.
From then on out, the Tigers didn't lose. Drake Houdashelt was a scoring machine in his 18-6 major over Rob Jillard. Houdashelt tallied eight takedowns with six in the third period alone. Houdashelt leads the squad with eight major decisions on the season.
Mizzou won by major decision at 157 and 165 as well. Kyle Bradley added two takedowns and a two-point nearfall in the third period against Andrew Morse of NIU to get into bonus point territory and take the bout 11-1. Junior Zach Toal followed that performance with a couple of two-point nearfalls in the first period to take a commanding 8-0 lead after two periods. The 165-pounder added one last takedown in the final frame and took the match 11-0.
Senior Todd Porter is still undefeated in dual matches after an 8-3 decision over Matt Mougin. Porter has been a force at 174 this season as he continues to work toward qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the first time in his career.
Seniors Mike Larson and Brent Haynes each added six team points via the fall in their matches. Larson trailed early, but after a mix of takedowns and two-point nearfalls, Mizzou's grappler out of McKinleyville, Calif. pinned his counterpart Bryan Loughlin with 13 seconds remaining in the third period. Brent Haynes only needed 2:52 to get the fall. Haynes proved to be too much for Huskies' grappler Parker Settecase, and quickly. Haynes had four nearfalls before finishing off Settecase.
No. 1 ranked Dom Bradley added the final three team points against NIU heavyweight Jared Torrence. Bradley took the match 2-1 with an escape and a point for riding time.

No. 5 Wrestling Takes Second Dual of Road Trip
Mizzou improves to 10-1 on the year after defeating 21-ranked Northern Iowa Sunday, 27-9.
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Mizzou Wrestling took care of business on Sunday on the backend of a two-dual road trip by defeating the Panthers of Northern Iowa 27-9. The Tigers only dropped two of 10 matches on Sunday against their new MAC Conference foe in their second win in as many days. Jauch took the lead early in the first period with a takedown but Waters responded with one of his own following an escape. Dom Bradley, ranked atop the heavyweight rankings, gained win number 26 on the year with a 4-1 decision over Blayne Beale. Senior Brent Haynes collected win number 105 in his career over Blaize Cabell, 9-0. Haynes won via the fall on Saturday when the squad battled Northern Iowa.
Coming up next for Missouri is a matchup against former Big 12 rival and No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State. The Tigers meet up with the Cowboys this Friday for this year's edition of Beauty and the Beast.

Northern Illinois Swept in Saturday Doubleheader
Huskies drop matches to No. 7 Missouri, Eastern Michigan
DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois wrestling team dropped both of their dual matches Saturday in Victor E. Court, losing to No. 7 Missouri and Eastern Michigan.
With the losses, NIU falls to 7-7 overall and 0-5 in the MAC. Meanwhile, MU improves to 9-1 and 1-1 in conference and EMU moves to 7-10 overall and 1-2 in MAC play.
“We need work,” said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. “We need to get back to working on bottom.”
The Huskies started the day on a sour note, dropping a hard-fought match to the Eastern Michigan Eagles.
“Again, we have to work off bottom,” Ludwig said. “We have to score and not get wrapped up in scramble situations. Absolutely cannot give up pins. That is non-negotiable and do our best to score bonus points where we can.”
EMU got on the board first when Alexander Calandrino defeated Nick Harrison by a 4-0 decision. Harrison, a redshirt freshman from Stillman Valley, Ill., was filling in with a spot start for Derek Elmore.
However, the Huskies responded with three consecutive wins to take a 10-3 lead through four matches. NIU took their first lead of the match behind Nick Smith’s 11-2 major decision at 133. They followed that up with Kevin Fanta’s 7-3 decision against Seth Schaner and Rob Jillard’s tight 4-2 win against Mike Shaw.
The Eagles would turn the tide of the match right before halftime, though, when Aaron Sulzer – a 2012 NCAA qualifier – pinned Huskie freshman Andrew Morse in the first period. The pin narrowed Northern’s advantage to 10-9 and closed the door on any chance of an NIU rout.
EMU regained the lead at 165 when Dan Burk fell by major decision to Jacob Davis. Yet, NIU moved back into the lead when Matt Mougin got a major of his own, beating Jacob Dorulla by a 10-2 margin to give the Huskies a 14-13 lead.
From there, NIU suffered two crushing losses that allowed Eastern to salt away the dual. Phillip Joseph earned a high-scoring 13-7 decision against Bryan Loughlin to put Northern behind 16-14. The backbreaker came at 197, when Nick Whitenburg scored a third period pin against Parker Settecase.
Jared Torrence closed the match with a 5-2 win against Chris Eggert at heavyweight. The win was Torrence’s 12th of the season.

NIU Loses to No. 7 Missouri, 39-3
The Huskies closed out the day against nationally-ranked Missouri, falling 39-3 to the Tigers.
“Absolutely, we can take positives,” Ludwig said. “(Kevin) Fanta had a dominating win at 141 over a very tough opponent. Secondly, you want to see a team like that before you head into conference tournaments, so you can study your matches a little bit and turn them around.”
The Tigers came out hot, racing to an early 9-0 lead. Third-ranked Alan Waters defeated Huskie Nick Harrison by a first period pin, while sixth-ranked Nathan McCormick topped Nick Smith in an 8-2 decision.
NIU, though, responded when Kevin Fanta outmuscled Nicholas Hucke at 141 in a 6-1 decision. The win was Fanta’s fifth straight and further solidified his NCAA resume heading into February.
However, Missouri took control of the match with a pair of major decisions to take a 17-3 lead going into the break. Rob Jillard fell at 149 to Drake Houdashelt in a 18-6 loss, while Andrew Morse lost by way of an 11-1 major against Kyle Bradley.
Things did not get any better for the Huskies in the second half, as the Tigers won all five upper weight matches. Sam Bennett lost to #14 Zach Toal at 165 in an 11-0 major decision, while Matt Mougin fell short of his upset bid in an 8-3 loss against #16 Todd Porter.
MU added consecutive pins at 184 and 197 to stretch their lead. Bryan Loughlin was pinned by #9Mike Larson late in their match. That was followed up by Parker Settecase getting topped by #11 Brent Haynes in the first period at 197.
Jared Torrence came just short of pulling off one of the nation’s most shocking upsets of the year. Facing top-ranked heavyweight Dom Bradley, Torrence was able to tie Bradley with less than a minute remaining in the match. However, he was unable to register a takedown and Bradley escaped with a 2-1 win courtesy of the riding time advantage.

Northern Iowa:
UNI's Lazor Gets Only Pin at Dual; Team Falls 27-9 to Missouri
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – University of Northern Iowa’s Joey Lazor and Ryan Loder picked up wins against No. 7 Missouri, but the team ultimately fell 27-9.
“We are looking forward to getting this behind us,” said head coach Doug Schwab. “We can get this turned around. These are the guys we will face at the national level, so we will look to get ready for this kind of competition in the weeks ahead.”
UNI moved into 21st in the rankings this week after beating then-ranked No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 21 Northwestern last week.
Lazor pinned Trevor Jauch in 3 minutes, 45 seconds to get the Panthers on the board.
“He got the control early, and Missouri had a plan on top,” said Schwab. “Some younger, less-experienced guys may have lost with the move Trevor Jauch used, but he rode it right through. Lazor is a guy who can wrestle out of it. He got the pin, and that was huge.”
Loder upset Mike Larson, who is ranked one spot ahead of Loder.
“It took him until the end, but he was awarded,” said Schwab. “It was a good win for him. We’d like him to widen that gap even more.”
Missouri’s top-ranked wrestlers were unable to win bonus points when facing Ryan Jauch at 125 pounds and Blayne Beale at heavyweight.
“They hung right in there,” Schwab said. “Missouri wasn’t able to widen the gap in the matches they probably expected.”
Ryan Jauch lost by decision to No. 3 Alan Waters, and Beale faced the top-ranked wrestler in the nation. Dom Bradley, Missouri’s heavyweight, took an Olympic redshirt last year.

Bobcats Down Michigan State on Senior Day, 22-16
`Cats pick up first victory over Spartans since the 1929-30 season
ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio University wrestling team claimed the final four bouts against Michigan State Sunday afternoon to earn a 22-16 victory over the Spartans Sunday afternoon inside the Convocation Center on Senior Day.
The win improved Ohio to 6-5 on the year and completed a 2-0 weekend for the Bobcats. In addition, Ohio picked up its first win over Michigan State since the 1929-30 season.
Ohio trailed 16-6 with four bouts remaining in the match. Redshirt junior Ryan Garringer (Downers Grove, Ill.) highlighted the Bobcats' furious comeback as he pinned No. 18 ranked John-Martin Cannon from Michigan State to put the `Cats ahead 19-16.
Garringer's pin came on the heels of back-to-back wins from teammates Harrison Hightower (Strongsville, Ohio) and No. 17 Cody Walters (Macedonia, Ohio). Hightower claimed the 165 match with a major decision to cut the Spartans' lead to 16-10. Walters followed and claimed his team-best seventh straight decision to make the count 16-13.
Following Garringer's pin No. 32 Phil Wellington (Euclid, Ohio) secured the Ohio win with a 7-4 decision over MSU's Luke Jones.
Ohio got on the board at 133 thanks to a victory by Joe Munos (South St. Paul, Minn.) over MSU's Brandon Fifield. Munos' 5-3 triumph gave him his second win on the weekend.
The Bobcats also got a 7-2 win from freshman Kagan Squire (Wadsworth, Ohio) as he picked up his third victory in his last four bouts.
The match began at heavyweight with No. 15 Jeremy Johnson (Broadview Heights, Ohio) facing off against No. 9 Michael McClure, who entered the bout, having lost just twice this season. Johnson's meeting with McClure marked the second time this season the two individuals had met. The two met earlier in the finals of the MSU Open with McClure coming away with the win.
Sunday's match followed a similar storyline, but not without a strong fight from Johnson. Despite the strong effort Johnson dropped his first decision in eight bouts, falling by a slim 3-2 margin.
Ohio will take a week off before traveling to Clarion on Friday, Feb. 8. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
