Buffalo:
Bulls Swept at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, VA - The Buffalo wrestling team drop both matches Friday at the Virginia Duals tournament, forcing the team into an early exit from the event. The Bulls (0-5) lost to Boise State (2-5) 29-9 in the first round, and then was edged 20-16 by Bucknell (3-6) in the consolation bracket.
Wrestling with a shuffled lineup, the team hung tough with the Broncos, who were receiving votes in the NWCA top 25 at the beginning of the week. Max Soria opened with an 8-5 decision over Rami Haddadin, and Erik Galloway returned to the lineup at his new 141 pound weight to win 10-5 over Travis Himmelman. Then, down 9-6, Mark Lewandowski tied up the dual with a 9-2 win over Holden Packard. Boise State would finish with wins in the final four matches, including bonus points at 184, 197, and heavyweight.
Then in the consolation round, the Bulls were forced to rally against the Bison, losing the first four matches of the dual in close affairs. Five different UB wrestlers competed at brand-new weight classes due to severe depth issues, but three would pull of wins in their new divisions to lead the way. Blake Roulo snapped the team out of its slump in a big way in the 157-pound bout, winning 16-1 over Vincent Favia for a five-point technical fall (the first of his career in a dual meet). That would be the first of four straight wins for UB, giving the team a 16-12 lead in the team score.
Wally Maziarz earned his first dual meet win of the season with a 5-0 shutout of Brenan McAllister at 165, then Dominic Montesanti won a 8-0 major decision over Ray Schlitt. Despite bumping up two whole weight classes than the dual against Boise State, Lewandowski won 12-1 over Robert Marchese to break the 12-12 tie and give the team a short-lived advantage. The Bison would win the last two matches to move on in the tournament.
In the three straight seasons the team has traveled to the Virginia Duals, this marks the first time that it was eliminated on the first day of action. The team will return to action on Jan. 18, facing Eastern Michigan at 7 pm.

Senior Ben Bennett, ranked No. 2 in the country at 184 pounds, then swung the momentum completely in the Chippewas' favor by putting Vincent Pickett to the mat at the 2:50 mark of the first period.
Redshirt freshman Jackson Lewis (197) and No. 7 senior Jarod Trice (HWT) closed the dual with a pair of decisions, as Lewis defeated Warren Bosch, 6-4, and Trice earned a 1-0 decision over Ernest James.
No. 9 senior Christian Cullinan opened the third-place dual versus Edinboro with a 12-4 major decision, while senior Donnie Corby and redshirt freshman Lucas Smith earned decisions at 149 and 157 pounds, respectively.

Wrestling Comes Up Empty at Pitt Duals
Eagles host Olivet Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Bowen Field House
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Coming off a victory a day earlier, the Eastern Michigan University wrestling team dropped all three matches at the annual Pitt Duals Sunday, Jan. 13. The Eagles (5-9; 0-1 MAC) started the day off with a 21-14 setback to Lock Haven and managed just 18 team points in 27-9 and 24-9 losses to No. 12 Pittsburgh and No. 24 Bloomsburg, respectively.
In the opening match of the day, the Bald Eagles never trailed en route to the six-point victory. EMU held the lead against both the Panthers and Huskies through three matches, but lineups full of nationally-ranked competition outlasted the Eagles' combatants on both occasions.
Redshirt sophomore Jake Byers won two matches on the day. His only loss cam against No. 15-ranked Shelton Mack of Pitt. Freshman Alexander Calandrino also received credit for two victories with one decision and another by way of forfeit.
Byers won the Eagles' first individual match at 133 lbs. to make it a 5-3 contest after Lock Haven opened with a technical fall at 125 lbs. Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer and freshman Jacob Davis each notched victories at 157 lbs. and 174 lbs., respectively, but Eastern Michigan was still behind, 18-9, following the 184-lbs. match.
A critical technical fall by redshirt junior Nick Whitenburg in his first dual-meet action after returning from injury pulled the Eagles to within four, 18-14, but redshirt junior Khodor Hoballah was unable to score a major decision against Harry turner, falling instead, 2-1, in the heavyweight match.
Pittsburgh forfeited the 125 lbs. match which afforded EMU an automatic 6-0 advantage. But aside from a decision by redshirt junior Seth Schaner at 141 lbs., the Eagles were unable to find a victory for the remainder of the contest. The Panthers scored six straight decisions followed by a fall at heavyweight for 24 unanswered points.
Despite just the one victory, EMU wrestlers competed hard against five top-15 wrestlers, losing only one bout by more than a decision. Joseph came closest to pulling off an upset, dropping his match to No. 14 Max Thomusseit by a 6-4 margin.
The final match of the day against Bloomsburg started off positively, with Calandrino and Byers each edging out 3-2 victories at 125 lbs. and 133 lbs., respectively. Bloomsburg gained control of the competition starting at 141 lbs., recording victories in seven of the final eight matches.
Joseph was the only other Eagle to post a win against the Huskies when he out-dueled Sam Shirey, 4-1.
The Eagles return to Ypsilanti to host Olivet Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Bowen Field House. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.

Kent State:
Flashes Top Arizona State and Old Dominion at Virginia Duals
HAMPTON, Va. – Kent State scored impressive victories over Arizona State and No. 25 Old Dominion, before falling to Boise State in a sixth place finish at the Virginia Duals Saturday inside the Hampton Coliseum. The Golden Flashes topped the Sun Devils 26-12 and won the last six matches in 27-6 victory over the Monarchs.
The Broncos took an early lead with a pin, won several tight matches and never trailed in a 27-12 win over the Flashes. The 3-2 weekend moved Kent State to 4-3 on the season.
"We did a good job of really grinding it out in a lot of matches," Head Coach Jim Andrassy said. "We wrestled really well in the first two duals today and pretty good last night against Virginia Tech…they're just better than us. We beat the No. 6 and 8 seeds in this tournament so it was not a bad weekend."
With the team score tied 6-6 after four matches against Old Dominion, senior Tommy Sasfy (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) got the rally going with an upset over No. 18 John Nicholson. Trailing 1-0 to start the third period, an escape halfway through the period and a takedown at the edge of the mat made the difference for Sasfy in a 3-2 victory.
"Tommy did a good job of fighting off his shots," Andrassy said. "He hung in there and got the takedown when needed to."
Sasfy's match was the first of six straight Kent State victories, which included one of Dustin Kilgore's (Berea, Ohio) three pins on the day. None of Kilgore's three opponents even made it to the third period, including No. 8 Jake Meredith of Arizona State. The Flashes' career-victory leader extended his winning streak to 46 matches and ran his season pin total to 11.
"Outside of the Top four guys in the country, I don't think anyone else can come close to him," Andrassy said. "Most guys get banged up and bruised by this point in the season, but I don't think he's been fazed by anything."
Also putting together a strong weekend was senior Casey Newburg (Union, Ohio), who went 4-1 over two days. Even in his loss to No. 11 Jake Swartz, Newburg did not surrender a takedown all weekend.
Freshman Luke Kern (Delta, Ohio), who's seen limited action in the lineup, registered a first period pin against Boise State's Ben DeMuele.
"Luke really went after him," Andrassy said. "If we can get him to be more consistent, he's going to do some big things here."
Senior Stevie Mitcheff (Lortain, Ohio), freshman Mack McGuire (Upper St. Clair, Pa.) and sophomore Caleb Marsh (Marysville, Ohio) all won two matches on the day.
Kent State jumps back into Mid-American Conference competition Friday, Jan. 18, hosting rival Ohio at 7 p.m. in the M.A.C. Center.

Fifteen Tigers Place at Roger Denker Open;
Cody Johnston, Johnny Eblen, and Devin Mellon all won titles Sunday at the University of Central Missouri.
COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Tigers continue to steamroll through the 2012-13 campaign as 15 of 22 Mizzou wrestlers placed in the 2013 Roger Denker Open at UCM Sunday. The Open featured 18 programs, including grapplers from the No. 3-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes and former Big 12 rival Oklahoma Sooners, who are ranked 10th in the nation. Missouri's Cody Johnston (174), Johnny Eblen (184), and Devin Mellon (HWT) all stood atop the podium in their respective weight classes.
At 174 pounds, the Tigers sent two to the finals in redshirt freshman Cody Johnston and junior Jordan Gagliano. Johnston took care of business against fellow teammate Gagliano with an 8-4 win by decision. Johnston reached the finals with two pins and a 4-3 decision over Jake Residori of SIUE in the semifinals. Johnston is 16-6 this year after his four wins on Sunday.
Johnny Eblen continued to impress in 2012-13 as well with his third first place finish in open tournaments this season. The sophomore won his first three matches Sunday with bonus points, and solidified his spot atop the podium with a 5-2 decision over Sam Brooks of Iowa. Eblen was also crowned champion at the Kaufman Brand Open and the UCM Open back in November. He has a bright career remaining with the Tigers as he has already accumulated a record of 49-14 after only about a season and a half of attached wrestling.
2012 NCAA Qualifier Devin Mellon also won his third open of the year after knocking off Tim Tuaquoi of host school UCM in the finals, 6-1. Mellon, now 21-3 on the season, is really making a name for himself in 2012-13 as the successor to the soon departing No. 1-ranked Dom Bradley. Mellon filled in for Bradley last year as he was taking an Olympic redshirt. Mellon qualified to the NCAA Championships last year in St. Louis after posting a 19-14 record in his redshirt freshman year.

Pins Doom Huskies in 32-13 Loss against Ohio
Four Bobcat pins too much for Northern Illinois
DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois wrestling team’s return home after a month-long road trip was not a warm one, as the Huskies lost to Mid-American Conference foe Ohio, 32-13.
With the loss, NIU drops to 7-4 overall and 0-2 in the MAC. On the other side, the Bobcats move to 4-3 and 2-1 in the conference.
“There’s no way to take (a loss like this),” said NIU head coach Ryan Ludwig. “You get back to work. The only guy that wrestled with the intensity we expect tonight is Nick Smith. The rest of the guys need to find their inner fire and intensity and bring it to the next match.”
Kevin Fanta got NIU on the board early with a 5-2 decision against Ohio’s Kagan Squire. After taking a 2-1 lead after the first period, Fanta took control of the match in the second period with an escape and takedown combo, then cruised to victory through the third.
The Bobcats, though, struck back quickly when Andrew Romanchik pinned Rob Jillard in the first period at 149, putting Ohio up 6-3. NIU would fall further behind when Spartak Chino defeated Andrew Morse by a 9-3 decision.
Things went from bad to worse for Northern when Dan Burk suffered a first period pin at the hands of Harrison Hightower to put Ohio ahead 15-3. The Bobcats added to that lead before halftime when Cody Walters outdueled Matt Mougin in a tough 5-2 decision.
Coming out of the break, NIU’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when Bryan Loughlin was pinned by 2012 NCAA qualifier Ryan Garringer despite Loughlin’s early takedown.
Ohio pushed their lead to 32-3 with a pair of major decisions. At 197, Phil Wellington got a 13-5 win over Arber Bebo, while Jared Torrence lost a 10-1 major against 2012 All-American and 15th-ranked Jeremy Johnson.
The Huskies closed the gap in the remaining two matches, starting with Derek Elmore’s forfeit win at 125. Nick Smith closed the night for Northern with a 9-1 major decision against Garret Garness at 133.
“You get back on the mat,” Ludwig said. “Tomorrow’s a new day. Get back to work. You improve. That’s what you do.”
The Huskies continue their homestand next Friday, Jan. 18, when they take on the No. 9 Central Michigan Chippewas at 7 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.

Northern Iowa:
UNI Wrestling Edged by Air Force, 19-18
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Northern Iowa spoiled the perfect dual records of five wrestlers from Air Force but ultimately fell to the Falcons in team scoring, 19-18.
No one on the Air Force squad had lost in a dual meet until wrestling UNI. The Panthers won half the matches, but came up short for a team win.
"It was a gut check for our team," said head coach Doug Schwab. "We just need to respond in the right way, and they will. You just have to figure out how to get their best performances each time out. We have to figure it out as coaches."
Cody Caldwell's late takedown put the Panthers on the winning path. He beat Tyler Mergen, 6-3, in the 174-pound weight class.
Devin Hightower got an early takedown against Ryan Loder, but those would be the only two points he scored. Loder escaped quickly and dominated the remainder of the match to win 12-2. Loder has lost just three matches season, giving up just nine points to opponents.
UNI lost its next three matches at the 197-pound, 285-pound and 125-pound weight classes to put Air Force ahead 12-7.
Levi Wolfensperger closed that gap in his match at 133 pounds with a win by decision. Wolfensperger got three takedowns in the first period to lead 6-2 at the start of the second period. Air Force's Dylan Hyder countered with a takedown and escape. Wolfensperger continued to lead in the third and went on to win 7-5.
In the 141-pound match, Joey Lazor came out tough and nearly pinned Carter McElhany in the first period. He continued to be aggressive, scoring on his second takedown and near fall in the match to win by a major decision.
Lazor's 11-1 win put the Panthers back on top in team scoring, 14-12.
"Lazor is wrestling well right now. He's fun to watch," said Schwab. "He is being aggressive. We need to more of that. He goes out and takes what he wants. We need others to follow that lead."
The momentum continued with UNI and Bart Reiter in the 149-pound weight class. Reiter scored a couple of near falls before Logan Burch got an escape. Reiter extended his lead to win with a technical fall, 19-3.
David Bonin, looking to build on UNI's 19-12 lead, went scoreless in the first period of the 157-pound match. He was the first to score with his escape and led 1-0 going into the third. However, he ended up losing to Josh Kreimier, 9-1, allowing Air Force to come back in team scoring, 19-16.
"Bonin got caught in a position," said Schwab. "The match score looks like a blowout, but it really came down to one position."
The meet's fate was determined in the final match at 165 pounds, where Jarrett Jensen faced Jesse Stafford. Jensen lost by decision. UNI lost a point for unsportsmanlike conduct from the bench.
Air Force went on to win 19-18.
"We didn't win the close matches when we needed to," said Schwab. "Now we look to Friday against Oklahoma."
UNI will return home to host Oklahoma at 7 p.m. Jan. 18. Former Panther and Olympic gold medalist Bill Smith will be on hand to be recognized for his achievements in wrestling.
