•  Akron is coming off a 77-61 loss to No. 16/13 Creighton in Omaha, Neb., on Dec. 9. Akron has three players scoring in double figures and seven averaging 7.0 points per game or better, including Zeke Marshall (12.0), Alex Abreu (11.1), Brian Walsh (10.1), Jake Kretzer (9.7), Chauncey Gilliam (8.7), Demetrius “Tree” Treadwell (7.8) and Nick Harney (7.3). In games through Dec. 14, the Zips are the only team in the MAC with seven players averaging at least 7.0 ppg. Marshall continues to own the defensive space around the rim, blocking more shots (29) than 146 DI teams and averaging more swats per game (4.14) than 229 DI squads (games through Dec. 9).
Eastern Michigan (6-2, 0-0 MAC) at Illinois-Chicago (8-1, 0-0 Horizon)

• With the 47-44 win, Dec. 8, against Purdue, Eastern defeated a Big Ten Conference opponent for the first time since an 89-83 overtime victory against the University of Michigan, Dec. 17, 1997, in Ann Arbor. The win was also the first home victory over a Big 10 team since a 92-76 throttling of Wisconsin, Dec. 10, 1994, at venerable Bowen Field House. e Eagles have prided themselves on defense since head coach Rob Murphy took over in Ypsilanti. Eastern leads the Mid-American Conference in scoring defense (55.5 ppg), field goal percentage defense (36.9 percent) and three-point field goal percentage defense (27.0 percent). EMU is also second in the MAC in blocks (5.9 bpg).
Winthrop (3-4, 0-0 MAC) at Ohio (7-2, 0-0 MAC)

• Ohio takes on Winthrop Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in the hopes of collecting its 17th straight win at home. The Bobcats return to the hardwood for their first game in seven days. In their last outing, Ohio defeated Oakland 78-61 to hand head coach Jim Christian his 200th career victory. In the win, Ohio guard D.J. Cooper recorded his second double-double on the year as he scored 10 points and dished out 13 assists. Cooper was one of four Bobcats that scored in double figures. Senior guard Walter Offutt led the way with 14 points. Ohio entered the week with four players averaging 10.0 points-or-more per game. The Bobcats were the only team in the league that had four players averaging double figures in scoring entering the week. 
Ball State (4-4, 0-0 MAC) at South Dakota (4-6, 1-1 Summit)

• The Ball State men’s basketball team travels to Vermillion, S.D., this weekend to meet South Dakota for the second time in a week. The teams met last Saturday in Muncie with the Cardinals claiming a 62-51 victory to improve their record to 4-4. South Dakota is 4-6 on the season. Majok Majok was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Co-Player of the Week Monday after averaging 13.5 points and 16.5 rebounds per game last week. Majok is averaging a double-double for the season at 13.1 points and 10.9 rebounds per game. He leads the MAC and ranks 13th nationally in rebounding in the most recent NCAA statistics.
