Here is a recap of MAC Wrestling action from last weekend.
CENTRAL MICHIGAN:
No. 11 Central Michigan Finishes 1-2 at Northeast Duals
TROY, N.Y. - The No. 11 Central Michigan wrestling team went 1-2 at the Northeast Duals Saturday, defeating Hofstra and falling to No. 8 Cornell and No. 10 Oklahoma.
Seniors Scottie Sentes, Ben Bennett and Jarod Trice each went undefeated on the day as Sentes earned a pair of wins over ranked opponents, Bennett a pair of major decisions and Trice a pair of decisions. Junior Craig Kelliher also went 2-0 in his season debut at 174 pounds, while sophomore Anthony Bill gave the Chippewas a 3-0 record at 174 with a decision versus Hofstra.
Senior Christian Cullinan continued his strong performance on the season despite dropping his opening match, going 2-1 on the day with a win over 2012 All-American and No. 10 ranked Steve Bonnano of Hofstra.
"We could have had some better results today," head coach Tom Borrelli said. "We wrestled hard but we dropped a few close matches that turned the two losses against us. I liked the way we competed today and I think in time with some changes to what we've seen today we can be a much tougher team in a few months."
The Chippewas (2-2) opened the day with a hard-fought 17-15 loss to the No. 8 Big Red despite splitting the 10 matches, 5-5. The Big Red were able to use bonus points at 165 and 197 pounds to edge the Chippewas, handing them their first loss of the season.
After senior Cullinan fell in the opening match at 125 pounds, Sentes earned a 7-1 decision over Bricker Dixon to tie the match, 3-3. The Big Red then won four of the next five, capped by a major decision from three-time national champion and No. 1 ranked Kyle Dake over No. 18 sophomore Mike Ottinger, 14-2.
Kelliher made his season debut at 174 pounds with a 7-3 decision over Duke Pickett and Bennett pulled CMU within a point with an 8-2 decision over Craig Scott. Bennett was nearly tied the dual at 13-13, but was unable to earn the final takedown he needed in the third period for the major decision.
Trice was able to win a 2-1 overtime decision over Stryker Lane at heavyweight, but needed a fall after Jackson Lewis fell in a major decision to Jace Bennett, 17-4, at 197 pounds.
The Maroon and Gold were able to get back on the winning track with a 24-9 victory over Hofstra in their second dual of the day, getting bonus points from Bennett and sophomore Dakota Cooley.
Cullinan opened the dual with 6-1 decision over Bonnano to earn the upset before Sentes earned his second decision over a ranked opponent by defeating No. 17 Jamie Franco, 8-2.
After a pair of wins by the Pride tied the match, 6-6, Cooley gave the Chippewas a 10-6 lead with a 13-0 major decision over Jay Lysne at 157 pounds. Ottinger and Bill then earned back-to-back decisions before Bennett won by technical fall at the 6:14 mark for bonus points and a 20-6 CMU advantage.
Lewis gave the Chippewas their final victory of the dual versus the Pride, defeating Tim Murphy, 6-0.
CMU closed the day with a tough loss to the No. 10 Sooners in a match that could have easily swung in the Chippewas' favor.
Cullinan opened things up with a 8-5 decision over Kyle Garcia to give the Chippewas' a 3-0 lead. Momentum then turned in the Sooners' favor, however, as they recorded back-to-back pins followed by a pair of overtime victories at 149 and 157 pounds to grab an 18-3 advantage.
Another decision by Oklahoma's No. 7 Bubby Graham over Ottinger pushed CMU's deficit to 21-3, but Kelliher and Bennett were able to claim back-to-back majors and Trice earned a 7-2 decision to make it a 24-14 final.
The Chippewas return to action next Saturday when they open Mid-American Conference play at Ohio for a 7 p.m. dual versus the Bobcats.

EASTERN MICHIGAN:
Eastern Michigan beats host No. 24 NDSU in thrilling rubber match
FARGO, N.D. — The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team went 2-1 at the Bison Quad Saturday, Nov. 24, with victories over Itasca Community College, 57-0, and No. 24 North Dakota State University, 18-17, along with a setback to No. 2 University of Minnesota, 36-4. The victory over NDSU marked the first time the Eagles (2-3) knocked off a ranked opponent since Derek DelPorto took over as EMU Head Coach in the 2006-07 season.
The Eagles received a 3-0 effort from redshirt freshman Vincent Pizzuto (133 lbs.), who notched a fall, major decision and decision on the afternoon. Pizzuto improves to 7-1 overall and 4-1 in regular-season duals.
“Vinny had a 3-0 day because he wrestles from whistle to whistle,” said Head Coach Derek DelPorto. “That kind of wrestling pays off almost every time.”
Redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer (157 lbs.), redshirt junior Justin Melick (149 lbs.) and redshirt freshman Anthony Abro (197 lbs.) also won two matches apiece with victories against Itasca and North Dakota State.
EMU started the day facing the Golden Gophers, who entered the weekend ranked first in the country according to several national polls. Minnesota sent seven nationally-ranked wrestlers into action against the Eagles and won nine-of-10 matches to walk away winners by 32 points.
Pizzuto was the lone EMU wrestler to win a match against Minnesota, earning a major decision over Jordan Kingsley, 12-2, at 133 lbs. At 157 lbs., redshirt senior Aaron Sulzer nearly pulled off a victory, but surrendered two points in overtime to walk away with a 3-1 loss.
“I think we took some really positive things away from that match regardless of the score,” said DelPorto. “We wrestled pretty hard and probably better against them than Michigan State and Clarion.”
Itasca stood little chance in the middle contest against an Eagles' squad which scored 57 of the maximum 60 points. EMU won seven matches by fall, one by technical fall, one by major decision and another by forfeit. Redshirt junior No. 19 Jared Germaine set the tone with a pin of Julian Valhuerdi at 1:19. Pizzuto, redshirt junior Mike LeHolm and redshirt freshman Justin Melick also registered falls in consecutive bouts.
After a Sulzer technical fall and a major decision from redshirt sophomore Jacob Dorulla, redshirt sophomore Mike Curby, redshirt junior Phillip Joseph and redshirt sophomore Anthony Abro turned in a pin apiece. Redshirt senior Chris Eggert earned a victory by way of forfeit at heavyweight.
EMU's final match of the day was against the host Bison, who had also lost to Minnesota and beaten Itasca. Following Germaine's second loss of the day against a ranked wrestler, No. 13 Trent Sprenkle, Pizzuto tied the dual, 3-3, with a 4-3 decision over Joshua Rodriguez at 133 lbs.
The Green and White would go on to win the next three matches and take a 15-3 stranglehold on the Bison. Seth Schaner scored five first-period points en route to a 6-4 decision at 141 lbs. Melick followed that up with his second pin of the day at the 4:57 mark of the 149 lbs. match and Sulzer won for a second-straight bout, 8-5
NDSU tried to mount a comeback over the next three matches, winning a pair of major decisions and a decision. Two nationally ranked wrestlers, No. 11 Steven Monk (165 lbs.) and No. 17 MacKain Stoll (184 lbs.) combined for seven team points and Kurtis Julson (174 lbs.) turned in additional three to make it a 15-14 contest with to matches left.
Abro stopped the Bisons' streak at 197 lbs. and won what proved to be the clinching match for the Eagles. The redshirt freshman kept his opponent Kellen Kleinschmidt off the scoreboard for the entire seven minutes en route to a 3-0 decision.
With the score 18-14, the Bison still had a chance for a comeback with a major decision, technical fall or pin. But redshirt junior David Box kept his first bout of the regular season within decision range against Evan Knutson, losing 10-7. EMU remained on top for good, 18-17.
“Anthony came through in a big way to put us up by four going into the heavyweight match,” DelPorto added. “North Dakota State has a nice team. I think we caught a few breaks to win, but sometimes that is a necessary component of competition.”
The Eagles wrap up the month of November with a home tussle against Cleveland State University Friday, Nov. 30, inside Bowen Field House. The match will get underway at 7 p.m.

MISSOURI:
Red-hot Tigers (5-0) Blast Stanford, South Dakota State
COLUMBIA, Mo. - For the first time since 2008-09, the Tigers are 5-0 to start the 2012-13 campaign. Mizzou continued to their hot start this year by winning 18 of 20 bouts on Saturday as they defeated South Dakota State 36-3 and Stanford, 31-3.
Picking up right where they left off last weekend in Saint Charles at the Joe Parisi Open, No. 4 Alan Waters and No. 6 Nathan McCormick set the tone for the seventh-ranked Wrestling program. Waters picked up wins number eight and nine on the year by way of a decision and major decision. The junior dominated in his first match versus Aaron Pickrel of South Dakota State, tallying 4:07 in riding time along with three 3-point near falls in a 16-2 major decision. He defeated Evan
Silver of Stanford by decision 5-1 in the second dual. Silver was 8-3 on the year before facing off against the Mizzou 125-pounder.
McCormick, who jumped from 8th to 6th in the rankings this past week, tacked on two wins as well to improve to 10-0 on the year and 5-0 in dual meets. McCormick won an 8-2 decision over Brance Simms of SDSU, and then added a 15-5 major decision with six takedowns against Stanford's Peter Russo.
At the highly competitive 141-weight class for Mizzou, 14th-ranked senior Nicholas Hucke and redshirt sophomore Trevor Jauch got the call for the Tigers. In his first career dual match as a Tiger, Jauch took full advantage of the opportunity by pinning Ben Gillette of South Dakota State. The pin came at 1:25 after he had taken a quick 5-0 lead with a takedown and a near fall. Jauch is arguably the most surprising wrestler for the Tigers thus far with a 12-0 record and two first place finishes at open tournaments.
Hucke got the nod against Stanford and added to his perfect dual record with a 5-1 decision over Josh Lauderdale. There was 4:32 seconds of riding time in favor of the Tigers' 141-pound grappler. Hucke is 5-2 in 2012, 3-0 in dual meets.
Following his three technical fall wins at Lindenwood last weekend, sophomore Drake Houdashelt won his two bouts as well and accounted for seven of Mizzou's 67 total dual points on the afternoon. After a 5-1 win over SDSU's Dustin Walraven, Houdashelt tallied 12 points against Stanford Cardinal Timmy Boone, seven of which came in the final frame. He is now 3-1 in duals with his only loss coming against Purdue in overtime.
Through the 157-pound bout versus South Dakota State, the Tigers hadn't lost a dual match since Patrick Robinson of Purdue defeated 165-pound Ty Prazma 7-3 back on November 10. Junior Kyle Bradley defeated his Jackrabbit opponent Cody Pack 8-3 to keep the winning streak alive; a streak in which Mizzou's program had outscored their opponents 69-0. During the streak that covered 19 total bouts, the Tigers had only given up one takedown or reversal. All of that came to an end during the 165-pound match between Missouri's Zach Toal and Joseph Brewster of SDSU. Toal had a 1-0 lead in the 2nd, but Brewster managed a takedown to take the lead and would never trail again. Toal tied it up at 3 with a takedown of his own in the 3rd, but the Jackrabbit wrestler pulled away with another two-point throw and went on to win 6-3 with riding time. Those were the only three team points that the visitors would muster. The No. 10-ranked Toal would redeem himself against Stanford with a 4-3 decision over Bret Baumbach.
Missouri was a perfect 8-0 in the 174, 184, 197, and 285-pound classes. Senior Todd Porter added a major and a decision to his season statistics with a 15-5 win over John Nething II (SDSU) and a 8-2 win against Tommy Kimbrell (STAN). Porter had a monster seven-point second period in his match with Nething II, as he finished with six total takedowns. Porter (9-1) has shot up to 16th in the rankings since beginning this year's campaign ranked around 30th in many polls.
184-pound senior Mike Larson advances to 4-0 in duals and 9-2 overall after two major decision-wins against Hunter Weddington and Alan Yen. Larson defeated Weddington (SDSU) 11-3 with 4:19 of riding time and also had 2:15 in his 9-1 major over Yen.
Mizzou is on the brink of another historic accolade at 197-pounds this year. No. 5-ranked Brent Haynes is only nine wins shy of 100-career wins after his two victories over his upperweight counterparts. Haynes took a 6-2 lead into the final frame versus Brandon Ballard of South Dakota State and went on to win by decision, 11-4. He then added his first major decision of the season against Michael Sojka, 11-2. Haynes is well on his way to joining an elite group of Tigers alumni that includes names such as Ben Askren and former head coach Wes Roper.
Dom Bradley rounded out both duals at heavyweight for Mizzou. Bradley made quick work of his first opponent J.J. Everard (SDSU) with a pin just 1:07 into the match. He now has four falls on the season, three of which came last weekend at the Joe Parisi Open in a total of 6:59. The No. 2-ranked heavyweight in the nation won an extremely close match against Dan Scherer of Stanford to end the afternoon. The bout was tied at 2 after three periods and was eventually decided in the second tiebreaker period with an escape by Mizzou's big man.
Stanford's one victory came at the 157-pound match between Kyle Bradley and Stanford's Kyle Meyer. Meyer won by decision 3-2 in a highly contested bout that came down to riding time.
The Tigers will now take a few days off from competition before traveling to the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational this weekend.
