CHANDLER, Ariz. – The National Field Hockey Coaches Association named its 2012 Longstreth/NFHCA Division I All-Region Teams on Thursday. The Mid-American Conference had several student-athletes named to the All-West Region Second-Team (listed below).
Central Michigan’s Simone Lazar is the first Chippewa to earn All-Region honors since Kim Erasmus earned second-team distinction in 2009.The award adds to an impressive post-season haul that includes first-team All-MAC and MAC All-Tournament honors.
Lazar’s efforts were instrumental in leading a CMU defense that was among the best in the conference. The Chippewas allowed the second-fewest goals in the conference with 44, and the defensive line allowed CMU goalkeepers to save just 97 shots, second lowest in the conference. She started all but three matches this season, including two shutout wins against No. 22 Maine and at conference foe Missouri State.
Julia Hoffman and Rebecca Lee were selected from Kent State. Lee earned second team all-region honors for the second straight year following a 2012 season in which she totaled 25 points by scoring nine goals to go along with seven assists. By being placed on the All-West Region team Lee has garnered her third award this year as Lee added to another accomplishment to her decorated career. She was also named as a First Team All-MAC selection as well as being placed on the All-MAC Tournament team.
Hofmann was Kent State's offensive leader this year as she managed to score a conference leading 16 goals to go along with three assists to earn 35 points for the Golden Flashes. Hofmann's award is the third of the season for her as well; having previously been named to the First Team All-MAC as well as being MAC Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending September 16.
Miller is earning an All-Region award for the first time in her career. This season she was named MAC Player of the Year after scoring 10 goals and recording four assists while leading the RedHawks to the MAC Regular Season Championship and their first MAC Tournament crown. Miller also made First-Team All-MAC and was MAC Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 25.
Dechant had an amazing rookie season for Miami that saw her score nine goals and dish out six assists. She was previously honored as the MAC Freshman of the Year and MAC Tournament MVP, as well as earning a spot on the All-MAC First-Team. She recorded the game-winning goal in four games, including both MAC Tournament contests, and had a season-high two goals in a 3-2 victory vs. Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sept. 24.
This honor comes for both Cathryn Altdoerffer and Taylor Brown just two weeks after they were named First Team All Mid-American Conference.
Brown led the Bobcats in multiple scoring categories during the 2012 season: goals (11), points (30), assists (T-1st with 8), shots (85), and shots on goal (49). Altdoerffer also had a strong season offensively, scoring two goals and contributing five assists.
