AKRON, Ohio – Senior goalkeeper David Meves has been named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week, the publication announced Monday.
With eight saves over two matches, Meves helped lead The University of Akron men's soccer team, which is ranked No. 3 in the nation by Top Drawer Soccer, to a pair of 2-0 shutout victories on the road at Penn State and Northern Illinois.
As a result, the Zips (9-1-2, 4-0-0 Mid-American Conference) have won their last six matches and shut out their last seven opponents.
With five saves against the Huskies, Meves posted the 47th clean sheet of his four-year career and now trails the school's all-time leader, Evan Bush (2005-08), by just one in that category. It is the second time Meves, a native of Arlington Heights, Ill., has earned National Team of the Week honors after earning the recognition earlier this year from Soccer America (Sept. 20).
A big week lies ahead for Akron, which returns home to face Michigan, its third Big Ten opponent of the season, Tuesday and new MAC member West Virginia Saturday. Both matches will begin at 7:30 p.m. (ET) at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
