AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron junior Eric Stevenson was named to the National Team of the Week by College Soccer News Monday after helping the Zips to a 4-0 season-opening victory over Florida Gulf Coast last weekend.
Stevenson, who had a great spring season, picked up where he left off with a goal and an assist to lead an Akron attack that out-shot the Eagles 14-6 overall and 11-0 on frame. His goal – a strike from 20 yards that landed in the left corner of the net – opened the scoring in the 20th minute and his pass in the second half sprung Thomas Schmitt to put the Zips up 2-0.
Fueled by Stevenson's fast start, Akron, which was ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA preseason poll, would score two more goals to put the game out of reach. With the victory, the Zips improved to 46-1-5 in their last 52 matches at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field.
Akron will be on the road for its next four matches, starting this weekend when the Zips travel to Omaha, Neb., for the Ameritas Classic. UA will face host preseason No. 3 Creighton, which advanced to the NCAA College Cup a year ago, this Friday (Aug. 31) at 8:30 p.m. ET and SIUE Sunday (Sept. 2) at 1 p.m. ET.
Nebraska Educational Television (NET) will carry a live broadcast of Friday's match. Akron fans can watch the free video stream, courtesy of the network, at NetNebraska.org.
