Caldwell, a senior from Braintree, Mass., and Trapp, a sophomore from Gahanna, Ohio, each started all 23 games last season for the Zips, who advanced to the NCAA Round of 16 for the fourth consecutive year.
It is the third significant preseason honor for Caldwell, who was also named to the Hermann Trophy Watch List and College Soccer News' Preseason All-America Team earlier this month.
After netting the game-winner in the national championship match in 2010, Caldwell enjoyed a breakout season last fall with career highs in goals (6) and assists (11). The veteran will once again be a key contributer in the starting lineup for the Zips, who enter the season ranked 10th in the nation, according the the NSCAA poll.
Trapp, who made an immediate impact as a true freshman, was rated the No. 1 freshman in the nation last fall, according to Top Drawer Soccer, and earned a spot on College Soccer News' Freshman All-America Team. The defensive midfielder contributed five assists during the campaign and then spent the summer training with the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team; representing our country at the annual Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.
After earning a pair of exhibition wins against Saint Louis (1-0) and Wright State (5-0), the 2012 Zips will officially open the new season tonight against Florida Gulf Coast at FirstEnergy Stadium – Cub Cadet Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., and the first 3,000 fans will receive a free Akron Men's Soccer poster.
Tickets for all 2012 contests start at $10 for General Admission, while Reserved Seats in the west bleachers are $15. The Single-Game Family Plan is $35 (General Admission seating). UA students with valid ID will be admitted free of charge.
