Junior outfielder Jason Kanzler was named as one of just nine Division I players in the nation to earn a spot on the ABCA's Rawlings Gold Glove Award team for defensive excellence. Kanzler becomes the first Buffalo player and the second player among all Mid-American Conference schools to win the award since it's inception in 2007.

"I think it's a perfect tribute to the season Jason had in the field. Defensively, he was the best outfielder I saw all year," said head coach Ron Torgalski. "He deserved this recognition, and to receive such a prestigious award is great for Jason, and for the program. When you look at the other guys selected, they all come from some pretty big programs, so for a mid-major school to be among those names really goes to show just how great he was this season."

Kanzler was the main catalyst that propelled the Bulls to a record-breaking season that included its first-ever trip to the MAC's postseason tournament. Despite recording 197 putouts (third most on the team), Kanzler was the only every-day player to post a flawless 1.000 fielding percentage. He also added 11 outfield assists, most among UB outfielders.

Aside from his defensive prowess, it was also his offense that gave the team a boost in the final month of the season. Ending the season on a 14-game hit streak, the junior batted .408 with seven doubles, five home runs, and 19 runs batted in over 17 games in the month of May. He finished the season with a .345 batting average and a spot on the All-MAC second team.

The Rawlings Gold Glove has been the standard for outstanding defensive play in the Major Leagues for the past 55 years.  This year marks the sixth season for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award with the American Baseball Coaches Association.

The ABCA All-American Committees select the Rawlings Gold Glove Award winners in their respective divisions.  Every college and high school coach in the country has the opportunity to participate through his respective regional chair.

Nine Players from each division (NCAA l, ll and lll, NAIA and Junior College l, ll and lll) are announced at the respective site of each division's national championship. Each winner receives the Rawlings Gold Glove Award similar to the MLB award. Each recipient's school also receives the award for permanent display.
