A Total of 18 MAC Student-Athletes Selected in 2012 MLB Draft

Updated 6/6/2012
Seacaucus, N.J. - A total of 18 MAC student-athletes were selected in this year's MLB Draft, including five on Day 2. Buffalo's Tom Murphy, Ohio's Seth Streich, Kent State's David Starn and Central Michigan teammates Jordan Dean & Zach Cooper were all selected on Tuesday, while all other student-athletes were selected today.

UB's Murphy was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in the third round (105 overall). He is the highest of the three players taken in the draft since the program's reinstatement, and in the program's history, he was the earliest drafted player since Peter Grimm went 56 overall in 1983. Murphy recently became the first player in program history to make the MAC All-Conference First Team twice in a career after hitting a program record 13 home runs and driving in 51 runs, which also is a team record for a single season.

Ohio's Streich was selected in the sixth round (199 overall) by the Oakland Athletics and becomes the first Ohio player to be selected in the MLB Draft since 2010. Streich led the team in strikeouts with 62 despite missing two starts because of an injury. He also appeared in 75.1 innings and logged three complete games, which tied for fourth in the Mid-American Conference. Streich becomes the 41st player to sign a professional contract under head coach Joe Carbone.

KSU's Starn was selected by the Atlanta Braves with the 239th pick in the seventh round. Starn becomes Kent State's 81st draft selection and first ever selected by the Braves. He is the 23rd Kent State pitcher who has been mentored by 15th-year associate head coach/pitching coach Mike Birkbeck to be drafted. A former walk-on, Starn has blossomed into a Louisville Slugger Second Team All-America pick and Kent State's career leader in pitching victories (28) strikeouts (338) and innings pitched (329.0). Starn became the second straight Kent State arm to earn Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year recognition, 10th in program history and fourth under the tutelage of Birkbeck in 2012. He ranks as the conference's top pitcher with a league-best 2.01 ERA and 118 strikeouts – the most in a single season in Kent State history - to go along with a 10-3 record on the hill. In conference action, Starn was 5-1 with a 2.21 ERA and 74 strikeouts against just 18 walks.

CMU's Dean and teammate Cooper were both selected in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball Draft Tuesday evening. Dean was taken by the Detroit Tigers with pick 484 of the draft, while Cooper was taken with the final pick of the round, No. 488, by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Dean led the Chippewas in batting average (.349), at-bats (275), runs (62), hits (96), home runs (7), slugging percentage (.487) and stolen bases in 2012 en route to being named a Second-Team All-MAC selection. His 275 at-bats were the most in CMU single season history, while his 96 hits are the second most in a single season and ranked sixth in Division I.

Cooper was the Chippewas’ Friday starter, finishing with a 7-5 record and 2.82 earned run average with 98 strikeouts in 108.1 innings pitched. He finished his career with the Maroon and Gold ranked third in strikeouts (27), sixth in decisions (35; 22-13), seventh in innings pitched (281.1) and 10th in wins (22).
