OXFORD, Ohio – On the heels of completing a spectacular softball career at Miami University, pitcher Jessica Simpson will be featured in the Sports Illustrated weekly column “Faces in the Crowd” of its June 4 issue. The issue featuring Simpson will be available on newsstands Tuesday May 29, while the online version of the “Faces in the Crowd” will be published on Wednesday, May 30.
Simpson holds nearly every pitching record in the Miami record books and also owns Mid-American Conference career records for wins and shutouts.
The magazine is highlighting what Simpson achieved during the 2012 season. She led the RedHawks with a 32-15 record and a 1.06 ERA. The 32 wins, along with her 358 strikeouts are both single-season school records, breaking the records she set last season. She won the MAC Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season and was named the MAC Tournament MVP for the second time in her career. At the NCAA Tournament, she held fifth-ranked Tennessee scoreless, leading the RedHawks to a 1-0 win. Simpson was named to the All-Mideast Region Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and is still eligible for All-America consideration.
“Faces in the Crowd” has been published every week in Sports Illustrated since 1956. It honors athletes of all ages who have achieved significant success in their particular sport.
