TOLEDO, OH - Toledo sophomore LHP Ryan Wilkinson has been named the Mid-American Conference’s Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week after tossing a three-hit shutout against Ball State in last Friday’s MAC series opener, the league office announced on Wednesday. A civil engineering major with a 3.873 grade-point average, Wilkinson’s performance propelled the Rockets to a three-game series sweep of the Cardinals and gave them sole possession of first place in the West Division.
This week’s MAC West Division Pitcher of the Week went the distance for the first time in his UT career and faced only 29 BSU batters to earn his squad-best sixth victory of the spring. He kept the Ball State hitters guessing at the plate all afternoon and finished with a collegiate-best nine strikeouts. Wilkinson retired the opposition in order on five occasions and the most batters he faced in an inning was four in the third and seventh. It was the Rockets’ first blanking of the spring and first since senior LHP Kyle Shaw worked a six-hit shutout against Western Michigan on April 29, 2011.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and performs well during the week’s competition. The winners are selected by a group of the conference’s faculty athletic representatives.
Wilkinson and the Rockets will return to the diamond this weekend, May 4-6, with a three-game series vs. Buffalo. Friday’s game from Scott Park is slated for 3:05 p.m., while Saturday’s and Sunday’s contests will begin at 1:05 p.m.
