DEKALB, Ill. (AP) - Michael Turner and Thomas Hammock each ran for two touchdowns Sept. 9 in leading Northern Illinois to a 52-0 win over Illinois State.
The Redbirds (1-1), ranked No. 5 in the latest Div I-AA poll, managed only 11 first downs, 73 yards rushing and 134 passing. They had four passes intercepted.
The Huskies (1-1), losers to Northwestern in their season opener 10 days earlier, improved to 25-22-9 against Illinois State in a series dating back to 1906. This
was their first meeting since 1992.
Hammock gained 140 yards on 29 carries as Northern grounded out 305 yards. Turner had 89 on 15 carries. Chris Finlen was 9-of-16 passing for 117 yards. He
was intercepted once and sacked twice.
Demerist Whitfield returned an interception 30 yards for a TD to put Northern up 10-0. Hammock had a 1-yard scoring run and Turner's pair of 2-yard TDs
followed. P.J. Fleck ran 4 yards for a score to make it 38-0 at halftime.
Hammock ran 9 yards in the third quarter and Dan Urban busted over from the 1 in the fourth.
Kevin Glenn was 9-of-21 passing for 111 yards.
The point total was the highest for Northern since a 62-14 win over Nevada-Las Vegas in 1995.
