Curtis and Kent State Win MAC Golf Championship

WESTERVILLE, OHIO (May 6) - Kent State's Ben Curtis swept the field taking medalist honors, MAC Golfer of the Year and earning the MAC Sportsmanship Award as voted by the 50 competing golfers at the 2000 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championship May 6. Curtis won medalist honors with a tournament-record 274 (66-69-69-70). John Mills carded a final round-low 67 to finish right behind Curtis (72-71-67-67--277) and help the Golden Flashes to the team title with a score of 1125 (282-283-279-281). The win marked KSU's fourth consecutive league title and 12th overall.

Toledo's Richard Elliott turned in a round-low 67 (73-75-74-67--289) to help the Rockets move into second place with a 1139 (286-286-293-274) team total. Ball State's Dan Witt also recorded a low-round 67 for the day.

Kent State's Herb Page was named the MAC Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season, while Miami's Eric Phipps earned MAC Freshman of the Year honors.

Three Golden Flashes were named to the All-MAC First Team in Curtis, Mills and the 1999 MAC Champion Danny Sahl. Toledo's Tim Rice and Miami's Lee Curry were also named to the first team. Elliott led the second team along with Eastern Michigan's Jaysen Hansen and Brent Goulding, Northern Illinois' Tim Countryman and Marshall's Sam O'Dell.

The MAC Championship was hosted by Ohio University at the Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio.
