Spires shot a season-best 216 (72-73-71) to finish fourth at the Penn
State/Rutherford Intercollegiate. He led the Bobcats to a third-place
finish as a team with a season-best score of 882 (292-296-294). He
improved his score of 23 strokes from the previous week and nine strokes
better than any of his spring tournaments.
Ben Curtis, Kent
Sr. Ostrander, Ohio
Curtis finished in third place at the Spartan Invitational, shooting a
one-under par 215 (71-73-71). He was only four strokes off the winning
total. Curtis has finished among the top-four at Kent's last three
tournaments.
Other Top Performances
Eric Phipps (Miami, Sr., Dixon, Ill.) led the RedHawks for the first
time in his Miami career, tying for 19th place at the Fossum-Spartan
Invitational. Phipps shot the best round of 18 for his career in the
second round, totaling 68 strokes. It also tied for the low-18 round of
the tournament.
Team Notes
Ohio plays host to the Mid-American Conference Championship at the The
Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio on May 3-6. The four-round
tournament will be played on the Medallion Club's Rockery and Meadow
course with a yardage of 6,802 on the par 72 round. Thursday's round
will will tee off at noon, followed by two rounds on Friday, beginning
at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. The final round Saturday will tee off at 8
a.m.
Kent looks to defend its MAC title at the MAC Men's Golf Championshi-ps
this weekend. The Golden Flashes have claimed the MAC title eight times
in the last nine years. Kent currently ranks 19th in the MasterCard
Collegiate Rankings and 22nd in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.
Dave Emanuelson of Northern Illinois was named a recipient of the 2000
College Golf Foundation MasterCard Graduate Scholarship. A finance and
economics major, Emanuelson will graduate this month after earning four
letters as a member of the Huskie golf team. He was the team's
co-captain for the past three years and was selected to the GTE/CoSIDA
Academic All-American Team as a sophomore and junior and the Golf
Coaches Association of America Academic All-America Team his junior
year. Emanuelson has plans to enroll in Law School this fall.
Each season, a committee from the College Golf Foundation selects one
male and one female golfer from the NCAA's Divisions I, II and III. The
$1,000 scholarship is funded with corporate support from MasterCard
International and is available to graduating varsity college golfers who
plan to continue their education in accredited post-graduate programs.
Ohio posted its best team finish of the year with a three-round score of
882 (292-296-294) to finish third at the Penn State/Rutherford
Intercollegiate. Freshman Jeff Chadwell and senior Joe Hill posted
top-20 finishes behind the Bobcat's leader, senior A.T. Spires, who
finished in a tie for fourth place. Chadwell matched a career-best 222
(70-75-77) to tie for 16th place, while Hill was hit 223 (74-76-73) to
tie for 19th place.
