INDIAN SPRINGS, OHIO (April 30) - Kent State University's women's golf team won its
second consecutive Mid-American Conference Golf Championship at Walden
Ponds Golf Course with a league-record score of 902 (306-296-300). The
Golden Flashes shaved 30 strokes off last year's winning score of 932.
Kent State's second-day score of 296 was also a league record, for a
single round.
Jan Dowling (Kent State) shot a three-round total of 220 (73-74-73) to
win the individual title for the second year in a row. The Golden
Flashes took the top three spots with Veronique Drouin in second place
(77-73-73=223), followed by Cheryl Tooshkenig in third place
(77-73-75=225). The old three-round tournament low score had been 225,
set by Dowling in 1999.
Ohio's Heather Fueger also set a tournament record as well as a course
record with her second-round total of 71 on Saturday, April 29. She
finished the tournament in a tie for seventh place (75-71-89=235). Her
71 was the lowest women's golf round in a tournament at Walden Ponds
Golf Course.
Kent State swept three individual honors with Dowling earning MAC Golfer
of the Year, Drouin being named MAC Freshman of the Year and Kent State
Head Coach Mike Morrow being voted the MAC Coach of the Year.
Toledo's Katie Jordan was named the MAC Sportswomen of the Year, as
voted by her peers. The award recognizes the player whom other players
most enjoy playing or conversing with; has good rapport with her own
team; is supportive of her own team, but also respects the competition;
makes players feel comfortable to be around her; commands respect and
esteem rather than merely being popular and would consider to be worthy
of representing women's intercollegiate golf to others.
Six Kent State athletes were named to the All-MAC team, while Ohio
earned three spots on the list. Kent State's Jan Dowling and Cheryl
Tooshkenig were named to the first team along with Ohio's Julee Sovesky
and Heather Fueger and Eastern Michigan's Stephanie Smoot.
Golden Flashes Veronique Drouin, Heather Dobbin and Leigh Ann Griffin
headed the second team along with Ohio's Candace Artz and Bowling
Green's Shelley Binzel.
Ohio finished second in the final team standings (312-298-315=925),
followed by Eastern Michigan in third place (320-322-311=953), Toledo in
fourth place (322-337-314=973), Bowling Green in fifth place
(346-333-319=998), Western Michigan in sixth place (334-335-331=1000)
and Northern Illinois in seventh place (332-339-335=1006).
