Bowling Green Clips Ball State, 4-3
The Bowling Green State University Falcons narrowly
avoided becoming the first higher seed to lose in the 2000 Mid-American
Conference Women's Tennis Tournament played April 28 at Western
Michigan's Sorensen Courts.
BGSU, seeded No. 3, edged Ball State 4-3 to earn a spot in the
tournament semifinals. The Falcons will square off against No. 2 seed
Western Michigan on April 29 at 1 p.m in a semifinal match. WMU defeated Northern
Illinois 4-0 on April 28. In the other semifinal matchup, No. 4
seed Miami tales on No. 1 Marshall. Miami edged No. 5 Eastern Michigan
4-3 while Marshall cruised past No. 8 Toledo 4-0.
Deidre Bissinger's 7-6 (5), 6-4 victory at No. 4 singles gave Bowling
Green a short-lived 3-2 lead. Julie Beekman evened the score for Ball
State with a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2. The deciding point came down to the
No. 3 singles contest, where the Falcons' Meghan Rhodes rallied to
defeat BSU's Darcy Poulos 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 and put BGSU in the tournament
semifinals.

Miami Outlasts Eastern Michigan, 4-3
The Miami University RedHawks earned a spot in the
semifinals of the 2000 Mid-American Conference Women's Tennis Tournament
by winning a 4-3 thriller over Eastern Michigan on April 28 at
Western Michigan's Sorensen Courts.
Miami moves on to face No. 1 seed Marshall, who defeated Toledo 4-0. The RedHawks improved to 12-10 on the year while EMU fell to
9-11. Miami and Marshall play at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, for a
chance to win the automatic NCAA Tournament bid.
After falling behind 1-0 after doubles play, Miami rallied with singles
wins at No. 4, 5, and 6. Junior Janet Baker came through with the
match-winning point. Baker won a three-set match against the Eagle's
Manuela Todorova 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4. MAC Player and Freshman of the
Year Rebecca Hawkins and fellow rookie Lisa D'Amelio both won singles
matches for EMU. Hawkins knocked off fellow all-conference first-team
pick Kadija Richards 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 at No. 1. D'Amelio won 2-6, 6-3, 6-3
against Ivona Grujic at No. 2. Eastern Michigan had reached the MAC
finals the last two seasons.
