Three games last night in women's Mid-American Conference action, and
three upsets by home teams. The biggest of the three was Miami ending
Kent's 12-game winning streak with a 74-72 victory in Oxford. The
RedHawks (12-7, 6-3) used a 65 percent shooting performance as a team
and a career-high and a Miami record-tying 32 points from Jenny Martin
to dispose of the Golden Flashes, who fell to 15-5 and 8-1 in league
play. The loss for Kent also ended the team's 18 consecutive regular
season MAC wins. Jamie Stewart added 11 points for Miami, which also
received 10 points each from Heather Cusick and AuBree Hamilton.
Hamilton also blocked five shots. Kent was led by Carrie Nance and Dawn
Zerman, who each had 18 points.
In other action, Marshall won its first league contest of the year,
defeating Bowling Green 69-59. The win for the Thundering Herd (7-14,
1-9) ended the team's current four-game skid and also stopped a 17-game
conference regular season losing streak. Marshall's Toni Patillo led
all scorers with 16 points, while Yashico Stevens contributed 12 points
and 10 rebounds. Bowling Green (5-15, 3-7) was paced by Afra Smith's 14
points and Angie Farmer's 13.
Northern Illinois improved to 5-15 overall and 4-5 in MAC play with a
61-60 win against Toledo. Charbea Haller netted 25 points for the
Huskies, who also received 13 from Kristan Knake and 10 from Michelle
Johnson. Knake and Johnson also added 10 boards each. Toledo (8-11,
5-4) was led by Courtney Risinger's 20 points and Adriane Bryant's 13.
Three more league contests are slated for Thursday. Buffalo travels to
Ball State, Eastern Michigan faces Western Michigan in Kalamazoo and
Akron hosts Ohio.
