Thirty-one years after his graduation from Marshall University, Bob Pruett was named head football coach on Jan. 9, 1996 after his stint as defensive coordinator at the University of Florida.

Only Tennessee's Phillip Fulmer (.857) has a higher career winning percentage than Pruett (.846) at the Division I-A level. Pruett and the Herd posted a 12-1 record for the 1998 season, including a 23-17 win over Toledo in the Mid-American Conference Championship Game. Pruett also led the Herd to a 48-29 win over Louisville in the Motor City Bowl, the school's first-ever bowl victory.
